Because it makes life a living hell. Not only does life at work suck but you basically live at work. And if you ever get downtime you will go straight to worrying that you're getting fired. It also makes you a shitty person and destroys all of your personal relationships.

To a degree. The problem with biglaw isn't so much that it introduces totally novel negatives it is that they're amplified significantly. Examples:

- In a normal job the hours are long. In biglaw the hours are REALLY AWFUL and you live in an environment where being forced to pull all nighters is not considered abnormal. In fact, they even have 24/7 office support and showers in the office because it is so common.

- In normal jobs you might be nervous about making small mistakes because your boss might bitch you out. In biglaw you are actually worried your entire career will be thrown off track because of a few typos.

- In normal jobs you worry about layoffs. In biglaw, there simply isn't job stability. It is so bad that if you have a calm day you start worrying you're going to lose your job.

And so on...

It doesn't really pay that much, especially in high COL cities like NYC/LA/SF/SD where even an 850 sqft condo in a decent area may run you $900k. Many people think it pays much because most new biglaw bros have never made 6 figures, but once you factor in cost of living AND student loans, it's just not much money.

The big money is going to the partners.

one of the reasons I poast this shtick is because i chose not to go to law school mainly because of this bort and now have a pretty shitty job/career trajectory. i'd be ok with that if i actually enjoyed my job but those are unicorn opportunities available to the few or the lucky, or maybe both.

i understand biglaw is tough but i dont think POASTERS realize how much putting in a few years of hard work can literally set you up for a life you'd never have a shot at otherwise. I'm speaking to the bright but unskilled people who go to T14s or T10's, whatever.

delusional in thinking they'd be happy working 9-5 for 60k working on meaningless stuff, with shitty coworkers without even enough office value to get a 'private' cubicle. delusional in thinking that being smart was some big advantage in a lowly office job where those who rise up the ranks are the right combination of lucky and small minded enough to enjoy the meaningless shit.

Lots of us BIGLAW types could have cut it in STEM and would actually enjoy our shit and also be balling out of control right now.

Fuck you dude.

No. Listen to me - I work in a high hours corporate America job now with a boss that gives me a ton of shit often unfairly and tons of fire alarms. I'm about to fire up my laptop and get back to work and probably have a few hours of work left tonight before I can sleep. It is FUCKING PARADISE compared to biglaw.

If you at 3AM introduce a typo into your work product all hell will break loose. For me, nothing will happen, and if I decide to blow this off I'll be perfectly fine. I won't pull an all nighter and haven't done so a single time in the over three years I've been here.

It isn't. I actually enjoy my job and shit like training, reading the news related to my field, talking to other professionals/attending conferences, or generally learning about cool toys in my area (which is pretty huge) are all working. And if I'm tired and have a slow day - then that's ok and nbd. You have no idea how shitty the billable hour really is. Plus, working 50-55 hours I'm considered the workaholic in the group and get credit for that. In biglaw, that is absolutely nothing special.

Not comparable. Shitjobs are a different kind of hell that makes biglaw seem ok. If you saw how most of white collar America actually works you would realize that you're being scammed.

Oh yeah, I'm never in the office past 8. They shut off the A/C and heating at like 6:30 or 7. I left at like 6:30 today and procrastinated until now, so not surprising I have work to do. And I'll be working from home tomorrow (and it'll be a short day).

"what do you do and how did you find something that you like so much?"

In-house attorney in a specialty I like (have a background in something else that I apply to my career).

"do you think youve just started liking it because that was necessary to not killself? serious ?"

An entirely fair q and no. Honestly, if I hated it I could do what most other people do around me and show up for my 40 hours, do a half-assed job and then go home. I'm gunning exactly because I want to keep moving up and because I like what I do.

Regarding counter-narratives: they exist because not all Biglaw jobs are created equal. The level of misery varies tremendously from firm to firm, and even within the same firm (where your QOL often depends on which partners are feeding you work, and your relationship with those partners).
