Recently started a business - on track for 1/4 million this year.

I'm applying to law schools, would it be douchey to list the profit on my resume?

several reasons:

1. being a lawyer means being on the sidelines. you will never be a decision maker again if you go down this path. you will instead be the same as your accountant, or your employees. you will always be taking direction from the people actually doing things. now that you've been in a position to make your own decisions, this will grate on you.

2. law school is stupidly expensive, and historically so. there is no more expensive time to go to law school than today. it's the worst offender of the rise in tuition trend. this doesn't apply if you have a full ride, but otherwise, what the fuck are you thinking spending 275K and three years on a degree that might net you, at the very best, a 160K salary for 60 plus hour weeks?

3. time value of money. you're making 250K profit right now, while you're young. milk that until the very end. you only need about 10x whatever you want your annual income to be in assets to never have to work again.

4. you can always go to law school. you can't always fuck around in incredibly risky businesses. one day, you'll get married, and after that, you'll probably have kids. regardless of your financial situation this greatly reduces your ability to do what you're doing right now.

5. you get old. your optimism wanes, your ambition will start to wane, your responsibilities grow. i remember what i felt like before law school, and i wish i could recapture that.

6. did i mention how being a lawyer means being a bitch? others in the profession don't feel this nearly as keenly as you will.

7. you have a chance to flip this into something far bigger than whatever law school will give you. look for potential buyers, big ones, that you might be able to swing a job with. that's a far greater leg up than going to law school.

8. less than 10% of lawyers make 160K starting out. most make less than 50K. think about that, and what you know about your own earning ability. do you really want to pay 200K and 3 years of your life for the 10% chance to make 160K? given the money you're making now and your experience you've got to be thinking there's a better bet to make than that.

9. law school is absolutely saturated with people who have no fucking clue, nor any respect, for what you're doing. they're almost all poli sci shitheads, or something else that's the same thing. if you enjoy being an entrepreneur, and business in general, law school is full of people who couldn't give a fuck less about what you're interested in.

sincerely HTH
