This is apparently what most of my friends, mainly techies, think. They believe that med students just spend 99% of their time memorizing shit, which they merely regurgitate as doctors, and don't have to use logic at all in their work. Credited opinion?

Doctors fuck up a lot more than you would expect given the supposed difficulty of getting into med school. Premed students seem to be of above average intelligence (within a good college), but they seem to be somewhat less creative than average. Doctors are pretty smart but not as smart as most people think they are.

Law, medicine, and science are aspirations. Finance is not an aspiration, its something people fall into because they dont find their calling elsewhere or because the only thing they care about is $$$$

Seriously, when's the last time you heard a high school valedictorian declare that they wanted to be a banker when they grew up?

Science PhDs are obviously the smartest. Furthermore they are harder working than everybody else including the finance guys.

As a profession medicine attracts smarter people than tech because there is more quality control. Dumb doctors are tolerated less than dumb engineers to the point that they aren't allowed to become doctors.

Whether that IQ is wasted on medical practice is another question.

A valid comparison would be MDs with JDs and PhDs in the respective fields.. or even MS for tech dudes.. I think you'll find the MDs are what the OP suggested.. dumb and hardworking.

True, I went to a T14 and some of my friends are still unemployed. I know they're smarter than people I know who became doctors (better test takers) but they didn't do so well in T-14 cause they were lazy plus the economy tanked when I was in law school, and now they are fucked. It's really shitty since I know they could have easily made it in some other profession that isn't so GPA curve based on hiring and isn't so fucked job-wise.

When I was in UG at an ivy the white doodz went into business/finance and pre-med was filled with asians and women. This may have changed with ITE. I think people are more interested in tech now. Also if you want to go into med school i think being a non-aspie White Guy gets you some form of AA.

Premed isn't really that hard. Physics is the most conceptually difficult class for most memorization junkies who major in bio etc. Orgo is like bio, all memorization. Med school is all memorization and multiple choice shit. People who struggled at my UG premed ended up dominating med school. I think it's easier than law school personally because it's just recognition memory.

Computer science, engineering, quant finance are harder.

I think there will always be some form of human "check" given our lawsuit happy society, but it's very possible that technological changes could change the demand for PCP's, pediatricians, etc. Mid level PA's and DNP's are already infringing on that territory.

Surgeons will not be replaced anytime in our lifetime, but you could not pay me enough to deal with that kind of physical exhaustion and stress on a daily basis.

anyone going to a US accredited med school (not DO school) is smarter and harder working than the average T25 law student or banking analyst.

a DO going into family medicine is shockingly unimpressive. among MD's, there is a wide gap between those scraping by who are relegated to shit residencies vs. those going to the most competitive programs and specialties. but MD >>>>>>>>> JD sorry lawfags

I don't know about that. the people who got hired for IBD or MBB, and at that time (mid 00's), went to HYS law from my school were really, really impressive. This was only out of undergrad though, MBA jobs are a lot easier to come by.

Obviously MD>JD, but to make the blanket statement that MD students are smarter than banking analysts is absolutely absurd, unless you're talking about some dood hanging out at Capital One in McLean. DO schools are also getting more competitive... my buddy's fiance went to NYCOM over Albany Med so she could stay in NYC. She does peds though and there are tons of DOs in peds so noone gives a shit.

Doctors used to be smarter. But the tech and finance boom during the past 30 years has lured the elite away. Better pay, status, more interesting work. Compare master of the universe or tech titan to putting your fingers up some prole's asshole.

Good dood geniuses become tech entrepreneurs or stem researchers.

Diuche geniuses go into finance, exec.

this was early 00's, after the first bubble popped, before the new tech boom. I think the valedictorian of my ivy was a math major who went to YLS. i knew a lot of STEM types who went to HYS for god knows what reason, and I have no idea what they are doing now. different times bro. obviously no one goes to law school now, but last decade they definitely did.

I find it upsetting that our former brightest young minds are wasting away in the fucking Latham Capital Markets department. The best thing about the implosion of the legal "profession" is that it is no longer a talent suck from other fields.

To become an IB analyst at a BB bank, one needs either to be extremely well-connected or to have PBK and the Econ-Math double major from a tip-top university.

These days, 3.75/168 guarantees admission to GULC, Cornell, Duke, and Michigan.

To earn admission to ANY accredited med school, one needs, what, 3.4/32 from a top-ish private university?

Guy I know went to a T-14. Got a C 1L year. ended up below average; had a 3.7 in bullshit liberal arts.

He decided to go to med school. Got a 4.0 in premed classes. Got into med school the first time he applied and is doing well in it.

Med school is overrated.

Not surprised that you're hearing this from a bunch of techies. Engineers and programmers are the most insufferable when it comes to thinking they're smarter than everybody else. Worse than lawyers.

The thing is they are smarter than everyone else. I thought computer science was hard as shit when I took it in college, but a lot of people in the class had been "programming" since they were 12. It was harder than anything else I took (math, physics, chem).

I think Comp Sci/EE can either be a great career or a shitty one. Older people tend to flame out and either go into business or become unemployed. Shit gets outsourced. The lucky ones start/join startups and make $$$$$$$$$ at a young age. I have a lot of computer engineers in my family and they made mostly shit money and got laid off in their 40s/50s. My dad was a lawlyer and ended up faring better, but that was a different generation.

Med school is like what law school used to be for T10ish students. A pretty reasonable guarantee on graduate education investment for the extremely risk averse, reasonably intelligent, and hardworking.

I find medicine interesting on paper but I'd never want to do that shit in real life. I have no interest in draining some old man's diabetic foot wound at 4AM or sticking my fingers in someone's asshole. I had to get a vaccination record from my old pediatrician's office (lol) adn being around those fucking screaming kids made me want to killself

I hate being around sick people, especially kids, since I'm sort of OCD. Kids touch everything and they are nasty. I remember sitting in a doctor's office with a bunch of sick kids (the family doc shared an office with the pediatrician). I left before my appointment and made another one with another doctor.

What I want to do: spend my independent wealth

Who the fuck wants to work a career if they dont have to. Being a doctor is like being a better paid janitor.

Holy shit the people in this thread are jealous.

Whether doctors are as smart as STEM types is up for debate, but they're definitely smarter than lawyers, even lawyers from "prestigious" law schools. Getting into ANY American med school is as hard as getting into a T14 law school.

Truly smart and talented people never go into law, it's just for people who strived hard for good grades in UG and aren't smart, creative or sociable enough to land another type of job (there are no pre-requisites, it doesn't require any specific major and law schools don't care about work experience). So law schools are filled with boring striver aspies. Doctors have to do well in years of hard pre-requisites and be normal and sociable enough to do well in interviews (again, no interviews required for ls). There's no comparison.

The smartest people in my hs went like this:

30% engineering

30% communications (movie director/writers/artists/marketing related stuff)

20% Finance/accounting

10% Medicine

The majority of people I see today as doctors were completely average in intelligence. Not a single genius ended up a doctor.

becuase med school and medicine , esp. surgery like ortho is about as unchill as you can get. Every single day on the job you can fuck up and ruin someone's life or kill them, and get sued and destroyed. a pediatrician where I grew up lost something like a 15 million dollar trial and it wasn't really clear that he did anything wrong, but the proles on the jury see a disabled baby and its working class mom and sympathize with them.
