"Mark" wrote the first gospel and the other 3 ripped him off and added their own bits. None of the 13 apostles actually wrote those gospels. You sound uninformed.

einstein had significant accomplishments but he wasn't nearly as smart as, say, von neumann who was his contemporary. and although newton did groundbreaking work in his time, he was a noted aspie and toiled endlessly in a time period when few others were inclined or in a position to do such work.

He didn't completely invent calculus by any stretch as many of the concepts were floating around already (hence why leibniz stumbles on it at the same time), but he did provide by far the best overview and more importantly applied it to physics to derive the basis for the fucking field. newton singlehandedly compiled more or less our existing knowledge of physics and math, vastly improved it, and used it to prove the basis for all physics and engineering to follow.

If you genuinely believe that Terence Tao deserves the title of genius over Aquinas, you are fucking useless and should killself. Aquinas' work was the cornerstone of a millennium of analytic philosophy and stands head and shoulders above the thinking of anyone else even close to his era in time. Your bias toward the modern is absurd.

it is exceedingly hard to simply create a new field of mathematics these days, but it suffices to say that he did win the fields medal and he has a reputation that is staggering among people in his field. in due course i expect that his wiki page will be similar in kind to von neumann's.

"Such is Tao's reputation that mathematicians now compete to interest him in their problems, and he is becoming a kind of Mr Fix-it for frustrated researchers. "If you're stuck on a problem, then one way out is to interest Terence Tao," says Charles Fefferman "

or, you know, there could actually be something unique about the past 50 years that sets it apart from the rest of human history. name me one recent mathematician who has invented a new field. you can't do it. why? because that time is over. even as recently as the nineteenth century, gauss was inventing stuff in number theory that an intelligent high schooler could understand. if terence tao is simply the best of his generation, that's enough to earn him a spot on the list via modern population and educational access considerations alone.

This is like saying Newton gets dinged because special relativity disproves his "wrong" conception of gravity.

The point is what the work means in context of what common thought was before and after. Aquinas subjected to cogent, rigorous analytical reason the ideology that dominated all of human history for a thousand years.

is this a joke? with regards to intellect i really couldn't take a pure philospher very seriously. sure if they were a hybrid math-philosopher then they could still be in the running. and sure it is possible that someone like aquinas actually WAS the smartest man who ever lived, and we simply don't know about it. but anyone whose entire body of work lies exclusively in philosophy simply has not produced the right kind of work to even be able to stack him up against the unadulterated genius of a gauss or a von neumann, and that's just an unfortunate fact.

The downfall of Western civilization is due in part to this mindset, leaving us with 180 technological advances without any philosophical geniuses to interpret what the fuck it is we're doing to human meaning, which allows brainless self-hating shitlibs to poison culture. The next great genius deserving of a spot on this list will be a philosopher.

you're missing the point. i don't deny that philosophers can play an important role in society, just that their line of work is hardly indicative of raw transcendent genius in the same way as mathematics and physics (or even literature) are.

math/physics is indicative of one kind of genius, literature another. these two kinds of genius are broadly incomparable so their respective fields cannot for our purposes be subsumed by one or the other. philosophy, however, is not the same. i would say that any genius level talent in math could be an excellent analytic philosopher, and any genius level talent in literature could be a first rate continental philosopher. so there is nothing to be said for philosophy on its own.

Wrong about math to philosophy. People underestimate the extent to which asking the right questions in the first place is integral to philosophy, a skill which does not necessarily follows from mathematical genius. The proof is in the fact that very good mathematicians often end up doing boring and uninspired philosophical work.

it's because the questions you can philosophically analyze (aside from fields like logic, which are more for providing a foundation for math) hit a roadblock after a certain point. there are myriad outcomes to the advance of technology and a consequence of this is our eventual realization that no one branch of thought can provide an answer, the best we can do is consider the possible outcomes to the extent we are feebly capable of guessing the fairly chaotic adaptation of society to new technology. with the extent of human literacy it's virtually impossible to have a novel insight on a philosophical question these days.

also LOL at bringing it back to an xoesque hatred of "shitlibbery". blame the shitlibs for not enough STEM, blame them for too many public policy majors wasting space, blame them for AIDS and modern economics as a whole, blame them for your voting booth, blame them for wondering what could happen if some stuff melts

1. Jesus - Obvious.

2. Plato - Essentially the grandfather of Western thought. Alfred North Whitehead said, "All of philosophy is a footnote to Plato."

3. Kant - Destroyed pure rationalism.

4. Francis Bacon - One of the most important Empiricists, defined the way we think about the world, now.

5. Charles Darwin - Wrote the first widely-accepted and still mostly-correct theory of biological evolution. Significant because it severed a final link between the physical world and non-empirical thought.

bro i think we have differing views on the definition of genius. you have a lot of people on your list who certainly are not the sharpest tools in the shed, although they did do groundbreaking work. what i mean by genius is similar to IQ, but with the caveat that it must be proven and demonstrated in a rigorous field so as to weed out those outlier/misfired duds like William Sidis and Christopher Lanagan who have 200 IQ but sit at home and do nothing all day (assuming those people aren't simply hoaxes).

You've just narrowed the definition of "genius" to mean "guys with a high IQ except for the guys with high IQs that I don't like."

Genius is not just raw mental power, but I think includes a spark of creativity and I guess independent thought.

The criterion of proving oneself in a rigorous field of intellectual endeavor is FAfR from an arbitrary selection of "guys with high IQs that I happen to like." There is a world of a difference between someone like Terence Tao who tested in the upper reaches of IQ and then DEMONSTRATED his ability at the highest echelons of pure mathematics, and christopher lanagan who as far as we can tell has done nothing of verifiable import. I agree that genius is not just raw mental power, and that it involves some creativity and independent thought. That's accounted for in the criterion of proving oneself in a rigorous field, which you cannot do unless you have considerable levels of creativity and independent thought. What YOU meant by those terms, however, and what I took issue with in your list, is someone who happened to have been at the right place at the right time, or someone who had a stroke of luck. Nobody honestly thinks that Darwin's insights were unique to him in the sense that only he could have come up with them given the experiences that he had. But we can be fairly certain that there is NOTHING fungible about Gauss's mind relative to the accomplishments that he made coupled with the experiences that he had.

again i didn't seriously consider any ancient dudes because their work is so obscure from a modern context, and maybe that's inherently unfair, but to all those who feel inclined to stack the list with greek luminaries and the like, consider that the current world population is probably orders of magnitude greater than the cumulative population of the entire history of greece, so anyone who stands out as a preeminent genius of today is almost certainly superior to the famous greeks of the past by statistical likelihood alone.

I love Feynman but I don't really think genius-wise he's extremely far ahead of his contemporaries. he's certainly the most *important* of that group historically speaking for his broader contributions, but that's a bit of a different topic

I think Tao is more an argument that the age of "geniuses" is done. Considering how much he stands out in a world with vastly increased literacy/life expectance/population/rigid academic structure, it's entirely possible someone like him would've stood out on a historical level even 70 years ago.

"the age of "geniuses" is done."

This seems vaguely accurate. I've often had the idea that Europe from 1650 to around 1950 was a period of explosive intellectual growth a-la classical Greece, while the subsequent Pax Americana period was more preoccupied with technical and engineering issues a-la imperial rome. Of course recent technological progress has definitely required many 'genius' contributions, but the 'geniuses' responsible for it don't seem to steal the show for their intellectual work, like they did in the old days.

just to make an analogy with sports because i don't think the point is sinking in: we surely had many great athletic talents in the early 20th century and prior, but the fact remains that high school kids today regularly run faster than what would have been the WORLD RECORD merely 60 or 70 years ago. this is the kind of sea change that we have seen in every area of human endeavor, and mathematics is no different. we have fewer geniuses of the holistic, completely dominating variety, but that should stand as no mark against the quality of their intellects. rather, it should stand as testament to how deep the fields today really are, and how efficient we have become at harnessing talent and directing it to far-sighted, productive uses.

Counterpoint: There are no composers alive today who can even begin to compete with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven. There are no painters alive today who can even begin to compete with the Old Masters. There are no sculptors alive today who can even begin to compete with those active during the Italian Renaissance. Etc. Is that because of lack of interest in these fields, or lack of relative talent?

To be fair,

(Actual idiot)

And I never said that no one alive "can" produce work on a level of Bach (although I strongly suspect that's the case)--I said that no one is. Which is a fact, although you are obviously too unlearned to even begin to follow a technical explanation of why that is. The question is whether that lack of production is due to lack of interest, or lack of talent, and I left it unanswered because I don't think it's provable either way. But the point is that no masterworks on par with Bach's are being produced today in the field of music, which at the very least undermines your conclusory statement that the greatest geniuses alive in all fields are probably alive today.

To be fair,

"Can" you read? "Can" in that context = no composer alive today (i.e., a working composer who is currently living on this earth) can compose like Bach. What's my proof? The fact that none of them even come close, and I find it beyond the realm of belief that that can be explained by a mere lack of trying; we're tlaking about proud working professionals who would be feted the world over and made very rich if they could produce music on that level. No one with any real knowledge of this field would dispute the statement that no composer alive today comes close to matching Bach in terms of sheer technical skill, and accordingly I'm not going to waste time trying to explain why to you because if you have to ask for proof of that statement, you probably couldn't understand it even if given to you--that's how obvious it is to people with any real knowledge of the field.

The larger question is whether any *human being* alive today, if properly trained as a composer, could compete with Bach. I don't think there's any way of answering that question, and that's the interesting question tha really gets to the point that you were trying to make.

But please, I beg you--don't assume my statements are erroneous. I am really interested in convincing you of this, just wait around for a little bit and I'll come back with a thoroughly sourced explanation where I show all my work. I promise. Just keep checking this thread every hour or so for the rest of the evening.

so you have zero evidence for your claim.

if it's so obviously true, i expect a professional composer or someone who studies the area to at least write an article in the nytimes directed towards laypersons pondering the question of why the quality of artistic output has decreased since the 1700s across the board.

but, huh, you have not a single piece of evidence. okay then, your opinions are quite worthless to me.

Exactly. Saying tao is one of the greatest geniuses would be like saying anyone else who currently happens to be at the top of their field is one of the greatest geniuses. it would be exactly equivalent to putting Thomas Nagel in the top 5 greatest geniuses of all time.

in the most objective category of human endeavor, athletics, the greatest performers today are indeed the greatest performers of all time by every metric.

they are so far and away better that it's not even close. we can say almost FOR SURE that the marathon record holder today is better at that distance than anyone alive in the previous 2000 years, and we can say FOR SURE that usain bolt is the best 100m runner in all of human history.

i don't see why the same principle can't be extended to non-objective fields like math and science if you butthurt romantic faggots would just stop clinging to the past so much.

A lot of that is due to better drugs, training, nutrition, etc. Those don't exist for the brain. Lol adderral.

Also don't forget that humanity has been in a dysgenic phase for a century.

Lastly, the level of focus is not the same. Too many distractions in modern life. Ok this relates to productivity rather than raw intelligence.

what do you think better nutrition does for the brain? what do you think talent search programs and early nurturing of talent and curiosity among children does for their interests?

yeah sure modern life has too many distractions but the primitive conditions of centuries ago without even air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter, were ideal for sustained concentration in abstract thought.

Idk, setting aside obvious malnutrition, cognitive function has proven to be very resistant to enhancement. I highly doubt postnatal improvement in nutrition results in higher IQ and does any academic truly put himself on a strict diet the way athletes do (ceatine, glutamine, etc.)

Prenatal is more important. However there hasn't been much improvement among the middle and upper classes which is where geniuses virtually always come from. OTOH there's been vast improvement among the lower classes which is where athletes come from.

Anyway, drugs are likely a much bigger factor than nutrition.

I suspect the talent search is a big factor. Now u have 1mm js mill's. Not sure how much an advantage precociousness is-don't forget that boy's name. Its probably at least as important and more widespread in athletics.

Overall ur probably right about the greatest geniuses being g around now due to sheer gene pool but it's quite different from the increase in athletic performance.

just as people have gotten taller with better nutrition, people have gotten smarter with better nutrition AND a more stimulating environment starting from birth.

if anything, i would expect the intellectual abilities of an advanced society to increase more than the physical abilities.

you talk as if all the gains in athletic abilities are due to illegal drugs. absolutely ridiculous.

also, "dysgenic"? no, due to global spread of talent and emphasis on education, geniuses are congregating in universities and tech hubs and getting married to each other at increasing rates. that would not be possible in the past.

are you fucking insane? i admit that any list of the top 5 is going to be arguable, but you don't see why the following even belong to the top 50???

-ramanujan the quintessential genius with almost no formal training who derived hundreds of mind-shattering combinatorial identities that even today are still being researched and verified. he was imported direct from a backwoods area of turdland after the highest rank mathematician in all of england intsnatly recognized his genius from a letter that he wrote and promptly became OBSESSED over ramanujan's singular and ineffable brilliance.

'Paul Erdos has passed on to us Hardy's personal ratings of mathematicians. Suppose that we rate mathematicians on the basis of pure talent on a scale from 0 to 100, Hardy gave himself a score of 25, J.E. Littlewood 30, David Hilbert 80 and Ramanujan 100.'"

for your reference, Hilbert was the leading mathematician in the world at the time.

-galois a brash youth who had little formal instruction and enjoyed pretty much no collaboration. this was owing to the fact that he was kicked out of school because he just couldn't give a fuck to be polite to the inferior minds instructing him, and spent most of his short time on earth as an outcast to the wider mathematical community. he spent most of his time political agitating in the french revolution and died at the age of 20 in a duel over some girl. before he died he outlined some of his work in a letter which was seminal to say the least and later revolutionized the field of algebra.

Hermann Weyl, a mathematician, said of this testament, "This letter, if judged by the novelty and profundity of ideas it contains, is perhaps the most substantial piece of writing in the whole literature of mankind."

-tao, i've defended him above.

i think galois often gets overlooked because of his young age but consider that in his time, his ideas were so novel that people often had no idea what the FUCk he was saying, and considered him a charlatan. he, meanwhile, couldn't give a FUCK about them to sit down and explain or even just exposit his work in an easily understandable form. and he died at TWENTY YEARS OLD. today, there is a whole sub-branch of algebra named after him which ALL mathematics graduate students have to learn.

he was an impetuous little dude who spent as much time in the streets doing edgy political stuff as he did at home doing math. he was challenged to a duel over a girl and accepted the challenge because it would have affronted his honor to do otherwise. a day before the duel, he even SENSED that he was going to die the next day, and as a result he prepared a rough manuscript of his works to date. imagine a GOAT genius preparing his magnum opus at the age of 20 as he literally prepares for death.
