At three hours each way, you'd basically have to live like a consultant that works at the client Monday-Thursday and comes home only for the weekends. You're not going to want to leave the office at 6:30 to get home at 9:30 so you can get up the next morning at 6 for another three hour drive.

I'm not sure how you avoid tolls by driving in from farther away, but if you are going to do a 6 hour weekly commute you will be spending considerably more than $1800 a year on gas. If you're working in a big city like NYC or LA, you'll probably have to spend at least $2k/month on a studio in a non-shitty part of town that isn't itself an hour from your office.
You can rationalize this decision all you want, but everyone on XO is going to tell you this is either flame or a big mistake. |

The only way this would work is if you could do amtrak and even then two hours is the outside limit. Three hours is like boston to NY or NY to DC on the train plus to and from the stations. I did gladwyne to NYC one summer and, besides the astronomical costs of the commute, it was hell either on the train (where at least I could sort of work in the pre mobile Internet era) or in the car where I was fine and happy until I got close to NYC and hit bumper to bumper. |

I could see doing this summers with a house in the hamptons from NYC, but year round is crazy.

If I ever have to work in NYC I will live in ruralish Conn or Pike County, but even that is only 90min or so. |

Not NYC, but I've been able to pull the monday in, wednesday out, thursday in and friday back. Have about an 1.25- 1.5 hour drive with no traffic one way. Also have train option, which ends up being about 2 hours door to door.
what sucks though is planning on leaving by 5pm, making plans, and then having shit blow up at work and staying in the city.
One way I rationalize it is that when I'm "home", I never drive and no traffic. Therefore, I spend less time in a car that most people prolly do per week with average commutes |
