I've been casually looking for about a year or so, and I don't remember it being this bad at any time in the last 12 mos. Just no in-house spots coming open. Also, talked to an in-house bro yesterday about a recent positing. He said they got over 200 apps in the first week. Wtf.

Not only is it bad, but they seemingly interview like 50 people for every spot, so even if you get an interview, just based on the randomness of the interview process your odds aren't good.

I've heard horror stories from people who have been looking during the past year.

When a firm interviews for a slot, they will only bring in someone if they are a likely candidate, but they won't keep interviewing people. If they find someone who has the qualifications and has a good interview, assuming they have a need, they will make the hire.

In-house they seem to just do massive amounts of interviews for a position. So not only do you have the potential chance of losing to someone with worse credentials because he may have a great interview, you also have a much more random process.

Maybe your firm does it differently, but, assuming they have a need, they will tend to interview far fewer people.

Or, they will tend to interview someone and actually make a decision on them. As opposed to running through a 1st round of 30 people and then deciding they want to call back 2 of them.

People are going on tons and tons of interviews, mostly for naught. Kind of a big waste of time for everyone imo.

When I was hired in my in-house gig a few years ago, they got a few resumes and they interviewed me and one other candidate. When we filled a position recently, we got so much interest that we decided we could afford to be picky. We interviewed a dozen candidates over the course of a few months and picked one with sterling credentials and a perfect interview. We didn't do multiple rounds or anything gay like that though.

I will say that from an employer's perspective, you're definitely better off interviewing a lot of candidates - everyone's busy, so it's not something we would just do for fun. Just a shitty market from the candidate's standpoint.

6 mos ago I actually turned down 2 positions (one I'm still glad I did, the other maybe not) which were offered with no connections. During the past 6 mos, I've applied to several jobs where I have very good contacts (although not the hiring manager) and I'm not even getting a call back. I practice in an in-demand specialty area so I know I will be fine, but it's fucking frustrating. I even know of a few positions where bros that greatly exceed the requirements (eg position calls for 5 yrs, they have 10 plus) can't get interviewed because there are even better candidates than them.

I'll give you guys the in-house perspective. My impression is that everyone is cutting costs or reducing costs. Therefore, hiring is kept to an absolute minimum. When you have 200 candidates it is going to be really hard to get the nod. Realistically, it is highly unlikely to be someone from a firm. In-house likes other in-house attorneys, preferably doing the exact thing that we're hiring for. The only way it is easier is if you have a specialized background that is a necessity for the position (tax, cs or ee, etc.)

This is dead on, particularly the part about in-house preferring to hire in-house attorneys. It used to be that a great law firm resume would get you a job but with hundreds of people applying there's no need to hire someone that would need to adapt to in-house life because you probably have 20 equally qualified people with in-house experience. The people I know who have gone in-house over the last few years have either been a perfect fit or have done it through networking into unposted jobs.

Yep. The other phenomenon I've seen is that among the hundreds of resumes in-house will get, there will often be some partners at major firms. Stop and think about this. What chance does a 3rd year biglaw associate have when he is competing with not only the 7th year associates but the freakin' partner too? And I am not talking about GC level positions either. I am talking about jobs that would have gone to the 3rd year associates.
