Seems to be popular for midlaw firms/boutiques to 401k match but something biglaw doesn't do. Sorta weird.

my old firm did this. it is a way to pass 401k testing from the irs or some shit. the bullshit thing though was that the 3% came from our base salary. so instead of 160 we earned 155 or so with 5 going to the 401k.

That's because there are rules against 401k plans favoring people that make a lit of money. Its common for fairly common for firms to do a 3% safe-harbor contribution.

They hire like 22 people a year and they make a third of them partners in 6 years. It's not really a widespread thing.

To be fair,

Brother if you're *legit billing* >3k hours annually for years on end (and they are indeed legit billing that), no amount of money short of seven figures is even arguably fairly compensating you for your time.

As a dude who billed 80 hours in the last week, I couldn't agree more. But, I'd rather make 300k for my 3000 hours at Susman than 200k for my 2900 hours at Quinn. That's all I'm saying.

When I was a law clerk, they sent a mailer detailing their bonuses and salaries and partnership odds. I applied and I've never received a rejection letter faster. It was in my mail box in 3 days, and I live no where near Houston.

downsides:

-3k hours/years

-you probably gotta live in Texas (mainly Houston); Seattle is an OK office; the LA/NY offices are too small

-partners there don't make that much

-they overrate clerkships and it causes their talent to suffer; a T6 honors grad who forgoes a clerkship won't get hired, but a UHouston grad who got a SD Tex clerkship will get hired

well, they have a summer program, so they get lots of t6 honors applicants that ALSO clerk. hard to imagine they're less talented than a host of other very-talented litigation firms (keker, morvillo, munger, w&c, etc.)
