I could bill 50 hours a week and do another 10 hours of bs no problem if I had control over when it got done. Having pointless fire drills on holidays is going to get me fired for screaming at the client.

If you just work all the time, without vacations, it is entirely predictable.

Nobody in my office does 300. 250 really stands out. 280 is the highest I've seen (not me). It's the unpredictability.

Yeah, even when I have several deals on fire (like right now) there's random lulls some days. I guess I could just bill that time when I'm surfing the net waiting, but i have no incentive to do so and people do get called out for overbilling

I'm in BIGPLAINTIFF now. It's nice that nobody nit picks my hours, anymore. I just bill (track, really) all my time and let it do what it do.

some weeks i'd go 35 hrs billables (always 45 hrs office time bare minimum) for 2-3 weeks in a row, then have 2 weeks of 157 billed hours. i think it's more effective for your psyche than constant grinding though the stress and fucked up guilt you somehow get is absurdly stressful.

lying to clients about shit being almost done or under control when nothing's been started because you're in court or de-stressing and you have trouble sleeping wondering what if you get sick or in a car wreck and can't finish and they find out you're lying...your emails to managing partners and ceos about progress of msj or trial exhibits, etc.

I don't have the luxury of lying to clients in transactional, there's a constant barrage of conf calls and documents flying around.

yeah the only advantage is i love going to msj or mtd hearings, or discovery and motion to compel shit in front of judges or magistrates and tearing shit up. i don't mind reading case law on lexis but i hate putting it together on paper, especially looking for a good historical explanation of the msj standard in those types of cases or an outline of the splits in the elements for similar causes of action.

depos suck, mediation is fun, trial prep sucks but trial is king...

I actually think it's more the hours plus the brutal grinding stressful painfully detailed work. I don't really mind the unpredictability (though I admittedly work in one of the most predictable areas).
