right. Partners are starting to take note, they've been speaking with each of the mid levels to get their feedback and to confirm the reports of his many f ups. I've noticed even one of the nicest partners being pretty short with him during meetings, questioning whether he understands what he's doing. I'm only a second year so I'm not used to this sort of thing. The guys in my class all managed fine. Is it possible they ax a first year in like 6 months time? Feel like I should try to help but also fearful of getting caught up in the whole situation.

Is there a well respected (by both the partners and the other associates) mid/senior level associate in your group? If so, go talk to him and tell him that you're concerned for the first year but that you probably aren't senior enough to step in and try to correct some of the behaviors that are getting the dude into trouble. If the mid/senior is a good bro he'll take the dude out to lunch and let him know what's up. I did this twice for first years. Once it worked and once it didn't. The partners found out I did it and several of them mentioned it in a very positive manner in my review. It's sort of like a nice version of a "code red" (A Few Good Men anybody?) in that this is the type of thing that the partners would like to see their associates take a crack at fixing before they have to get their hands dirty (i.e., fire a first year after 9 months).

That sounds like a good approach. Kind of an awkward convo to have but there are a few mid/seniors that I think would take the bullet and do it.

Good luck. The fact that you care and are trying to help out is probably a good indication that in a few years you will be the bro mid level who people come to for help with this type of thing.

Legal research for the most part. The one thing you should have a handle on when you start at a firm.

He's f'd up on legal research; saying a case stands for one thing and then when someone reviewed it before putting in a client memo, they found out it stood for the opposite result. He also has a tendency to not accept blame and has tried to throw another first year under the bus for something he was supposed to do, but just completely failed to do.

We're in a hybrid group, so he's had exposure to transactional stuff and screwed that up too. Was helping out with a closing and royally and repeatedly f'd up some signature pages.

Why is it such a big deal to fuck up something like that? At my job, my boss would say, "Hey can you fix the signature page? It needs to be like x" and I'd do it and that would be the end of it.

Well if you can't trust someone to be able get basic things right, it's kind of hard to trust them with anything of significance. Obviously everyone screws stuff up from time to time but this was worse than that. There were glaring errors after being told to fix multiple times.

Yeah the throwing someone under the bus thing pissed me off, but I've never been in his position. I have to imagine he's starting to freak out and might not be handling himself rationally. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt for at least a little while longer.
