i love how the engineers, applied maths, computer scientists, and non-rigorous physics majors try to hop on the bandwagon of pure abstract math.

stuff like differential equations is as removed from pure math as high school algebra and geometry are from differential equations. not talking about the same thing anymore so don't conflate the two.

Many of the proofs you see in algorithms classes are on par with anything you would see in an undergraduate math class.

Overall I agree with your assertion that people often inflate the difficulty of engineering math which is largely just chugging through computations. But you don't really do that in computer science. You do lots of proofs, just like in "real" math.

and i don't agree with you because not all proofs-based content are the same. combinatorics is very concrete and a lot easier. it's the most TTT area of math and most colleges don't offer more than an intermediate course on it.

it's pretty much the same stuff as "discrete math" which is the first proofs-based class any math major ever takes, usually in their freshman or sophomore year.

Combinatorics and discrete math are not representative of theoretical cs. What real math classes are you talking about? I'm guessing I have taken them and they are no harder than theoretical cs classes like algorithms or automata theory.

seeing as these are literally the two easiest areas of math, any other classes at an equivalent level would be harder.

i know you're going to respond back "durrr i took all those classes and they were EASY" but just lol at you.

my real analysis class basically was a course in proving all major theorems used in calculus plus some other shit

my complex analysis course was even more awesome - i remember talking to a CS buddy and he was trying to write some graphics lib and mentioned a problem he was having where he had to calculate some complicated shit, and i literally got to say "oh that's just a specific application of this theorem, and in your case, it's reducible to a single variable equation" and then showed him in my complex analysis notes the derivation we'd just made a few weeks earlier

tbf i almost dropped the class after that for being too applied GROSS

[Feynman] was eventually snared by Mary Louise Bell – "a platinum blonde with a penchant for high heels and tight clothes," according to Lawrence Krauss. They married in 1952 and divorced shortly afterwards. "He begins working calculus problems in his head as soon as he awakens," Bell complained to a divorce judge. "He did calculus while driving, while sitting in the living room and while lying in bed at night."
