The first question I would ask is how much you care about a 3rd row seat. If you plan on having more kids then you might want a legit people hauler with that 3rd row. The Highlander will be more reliable, and Toyota service is better than Jeep service.
The Jeep can be faster (with the Hemi, but at the expense of decent fuel economy), better off the pavement (which, like 2% of people ever actually do), and more luxurious (if you spend close to $60k for the Overland or Summit trims). Just depends on what you want it for. |

So far only one thing resulted in it being towed in, which was a water pump that broke with all the coolant leaking out. Otherwise, some minor shit like the side door plastic things pealing off and a brake booster recall. Just oil changes otherwise. But I do have a few annoyances I'm going to have to harass the dealer on (noises coming from the suspension and the passenger side seat). With the hemi it is fast as fuck - you'll get from 0-60 in under 7 seconds and it performs really well at 100mph+. The air suspension causes it to go lower to the ground at very high speeds, so it doesn't feel like a top heavy truck. It has a sports setting so the transmission feels much sportier when you feel like that. And when it snows you can raise the air suspension, set it to snow mode and it feels like a tank. When there was flooding I took it through a few feet of standing water and it was nbd. Inside it is all leather including a leather stitched dash and it has every tech toy like adaptive cruise control, sensors all around, great sound system, etc. Basically, the car itself is exceptionally high end and competes well with Land Rover and Mercedes Benz. I had another Grand Cherokee many years ago (like in the 90s/early 2000s) and it was very reliable overall. I sold it at like 200k miles because the a/c broke and it would have cost a bunch to fix it. Some redneck looking guy showed up and paid me a few grand for it. Broke down maybe 2-3x, all over 150k miles. None of the fixes were exceedingly expensive. Then I went with a few Japanese sedans, which broke down more than that. But here's the key difference in reliability: the Jeep had random shit occasionally fail. Like the radio failed and got replaced. And some random lights wouldn't work. Or I would get a random leak. The Jap cars didn't do that.
Anyway, so far it is looking like the new Jeep is the same kind of thing. Though the direct competitors like Land Rover have the same issue. Basically, they shove a lot of technology into that car and the more you shove in the more it breaks. Compare it to a 4Runner or a Highlander and you have a much simpler car. No air suspension, still truck on frame (for the 4Runner, the Highlander is a unibody but can't handle snow and crap to the same extent), far fewer electronics. |

Unless you plan on replacing the factory tires with a much nubbier set and doing some real mudding, a 2 speed transfer case is pointless. As for the real leather stitched dash, that seems like an odd feature to be concerned about at this price point.
I am not saying that the Explorer is better than the JGC. They are very different vehicles. |

Yes, I only have OEM tires on 20" rims but it got through some truly awful stuff. No, I'm not going rock climbing in it, but there were times when the only thing I would tolerate instead would be something like a Land Rover or an M Class (which is just a variation of the JGC).
Just noting that Jeep has some legit luxury features that are very nice to have. Changes the feel of the car dramatically.
I agree that ultimately they're very different vehicles. Also, they're realistically in a different price point. The higher trim Jeeps are in the $50-60k range, which is a good $15k+ more than the highest trim Explorers. |
