The espresso is just as good as their coffee - average. I always get the dark roast when I have to get Starbucks and it's fine. There's not a huge difference between their coffee and coffee from another shop. But there is an enormous difference between Starbucks espresso and good espresso.

Well I guess we just disagree bro. There's a mom & pop coffee shop in my neighborhood that makes some 180 coffee. It's not even close to comparable with Starbucks. Even Dunkin Donuts is far above Starbucks. I find Starbuck's espresso fine though so I'll get an Americano from there if I'm in the mood for a coffee.

In one test, Brochet included fifty-four wine experts and asked them to give their impressions of what looked like two glasses of red and white wine. The wines were actually the same white wine, one of which had been tinted red with food coloring. But that didn’t stop the experts from describing the “red” wine in language typically used to describe red wines. One expert said that it was “jammy,”5 while another enjoyed its “crushed red fruit.”

---

So this doesn't prove that they can't tell the difference. It proves that when they are lied to they accepted it and didn't think they were being tested. If you asked them to taste red or white blind I bet they would get it right. Also, it doesn't say what kind of whites he was using. Some of them can be confusingly heavy or fruity.

Drink my coffee black and, when you're not polluting it with with cream and sugar, there is a very noticeable difference between premium coffee and average stuff.

As for the OP, the reason it is so strong is because they put about 4 tablespoons of ground in for a 12 oz coffee. Do the same at home with their store bought and you'll get the same buzz (at a fraction of the price).

But they cut it with water. If you look in their brew filters there's a metal part that pushes back the filter so that it can put more water in the brew.

This varies by region for them too.

Why would they do that? It's not like you can use those grounds again once water has gone through them.... Wouldn't it be more profitable to not water down smaller amounts of ground?

I've never heard of Starbucks using more than 2 tbls per cup like you say. Link?

The reason they water the coffee down after brewing (or on the side) is because they don't want to over-extract the beans. I'm pretty sure they use about 2 tbls/cup. They carefully weigh each filter. I'm gonna ask next time I go in.

Actually, this is wrong. The wine analogy does not hold up for coffee. It has been written about extensively wrt DD and SBUX and why DD has one brand and SBUX brews like three at a time. I think Malcolm Gladwell has like an entire chapeter of a book on it. There is also a HBS case study.

I worked at SBUX for several years in college. They follow the 2 tbsp per cup formula (or pretty close to it) even when brewing their big pots in the store. That, combined with the fact that most of their beans are a bit on the overroasted side, makes for a pretty strong tasting cup of coffee. I have never cared for their brewed coffee and almost always go the Americano route.

Right. The over roasting actually leads to slightly less caffeine.

Most caffeine is in the light roasts.
