Date: March 27th, 2014 1:54 PM Author: Black travel guidebook base meh, not completely credited. most tourists don't even realize they're getting fucked over. the percentage of people who at least *try* to fuck you over is higher in the Middle East and Muslim countries than anywhere else I've been. of course you're right that they stop eventually if you're persistent and know what shit actually costs. but i found this to be true in israel too (some moneychanger in jerusalem tried to gyp me out of 20 USD. after i argued with him for 10 minutes and threatened to call the cops, he gave it back).
my favorite time was when i was at the crossing into the galilee that i posted about yesterday. there was an israeli dude on the bus with me, who thought he was a hotshot and was joking and chatting with the bus driver, the guards and the jordanian immigration people in arabic the entire time. on the way across the actual border, i brought up that the exit fee was 8 bucks or something, and he's like "you mean 24 bucks" and i said "no, it was 8 bucks" and he sort of pauses with this look on his face, asks the bus driver in arabic how much it cost, and the bus driver reluctantly admits it was 8 bucks. oh man, his reaction was priceless. lol. |

vietnam/cambodia are pretty bad in this respect too and probably the worst non-muslim countries i've been to as far as this is concerned, but thailand is mostly chill except for the palace precinct and hooker bars.
india is bad, but they're easily outsmarted and nowhere near as bad as the muslims.
in china people quote you prices that are way too high, but they do this to everyone and haggling is expected. i always ended up getting local price after haggling. nobody ever fucked me over or refused to help me out of a jam in order to make a buck. |

though, to defend muslims, the muslim places off the beaten path that don't see many tourists are actually relatively chill. you'll actually get hospitality and they'll give you free shit and you won't be seen as a moneybag because they're not in that frame of mind b/c they don't see tourists regularly.

i got robbed by a taxi driver once in a shit Arab country . the guy was an angry 6'5" motherfucker who drove me into the desert to take my money while i was distracted by this clueless bimbo i had picked up along the way. that was a lesson in itself. anyway, at that point i was in dire need of cash. i told this jordanian guy my story and he was considering helping me (though i wasn't asking him for help). then he asked me if i was muslim. when i said no, he pointed to a dilapidated shack, said it was a church and said the church had lots of money and they could help me out. yet the same guy also invited me to his house and to a graduation party. i had a blast and with a level of hospitality that i haven't experienced anywhere else.
i also ended up booking this hostel that was mentioned by name in the travel guides as a huge scam to rob tourists... it said they ran straight up con games. when i got there i told the hostel owner that i didn't have money to eat, and he invited me to a huge bedouin feast at his house. |
