damm. that type of self-confidence is pretty alpha.

good buddy who did MIT undergrad, math and CS double major, turned down HBS and Stanford last year. he's totally confidnet in his decision and very happy with where he's at in life.

This is so hard to achieve. You must literally not give a shit about what people in general think of you. Having a Harvard degree is like adding 10pts to you're self-worth, anybody in our society could use those 10pts. I wonder about these types of ppl, bro. This ain't normal, as far as I know.

it's fucking harvard vs MIT, not harvard vs BU. scientists and CS types (not counting biology/premeds) revere MIT more than harvard, it's perfectly reasonable that such a person would turn them down

especially if you're a CS major, although obviously you're set for life going to either, MIT just has more cool shit going on in case you're not actually a $$$-chasing startup fag. there's nothing at H that rivals the media lab, for instance

If you're Asian, where you go to school is particularly important.

Like I said, actually Latinos outnumber Asian Americans at the Cal States, but the nicest things ppl in California say about Latinos are that they are "hard working."

But it's the East Asians who are seen as smart, financially successfully, and on top b/c we attend all the big name schools like Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and USC.

Being Asian American, perception and prestige ARE a big deal.

It's cultural. And our hardass Asian American Tiger parents talk about how white people will only respect us if we went to an Ivy League school (or comparable, e.g. MIT, Duke, Stanford, etc.).

Part of why Asian americans are perceived as successful and the model minority is greatly attributed to the fact that Asian Americans went to Ivy League universities in high numbers.

If Asian Americans went to TTT schools, we wouldn't be that respected, particularly by the elite of society.

I mean, Latinos actually outnumber Asian Americans at most Cal States, yet Asian Americans are seen as the model minority b/c we outnumber everybody else in attending the schools that actually matter.

It's also my observation that (generally speaking), whites don't really care about school name as much as Asian Americans. They tend to focus on "feel" and "comfort" of the school whereas East Asians focus mostly on reputation and school ranking.

That's why Asian Americans are moving up in this world.

Yeah, Asians are all about the "harvard" name and shit and from personal experiences, a lot of it comes from insecurities.

East Asians are some of the most insecure people in the world and they see going to an Ivy League university as "validation" of their success.

IT has to do w/ "perception" more than anything else.

There's the "perception" that East Asian who go to Ivies are automatically superior, e.g. Amy Chua and Tiger Mom.

Which unfortunately is backed up by some extent. You look up various East Asian people working in highly prestigious fields and I'd say 90 to 95% attended a highly ranked university. The ones who attended TTTs for undergraduate often went to Ivies for their MBAs and shit.

The two Chinese guys I knew from Wall Street who went to Rutgers both ended up getting their MBAs from Columbia and their salaries (and job titles) increased exponentially.

Yeah, there are exceptions to the rule...

Charles B. Wang

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wang

Went to Queens College and basically hustled his way to the top.

Also Kickstarter founder Perry Chen went to Tulane University (although not a bad school, still considered a TTT by East Asian standards).

No doubt about it.

The best trial lawyers I've met went to fourth tier law schools and are killing it in courts. They usually have their own practice or one or two partners at most.

There's some truth that some of the best lawyers attended the worst law schools b/c those toilet law schools really put their students through the wringer and force them to be trial lawyers and think on their feet. They KNOW they went to crappy law schools so they have a chip on their shoulder and are out to prove themselves with their solo practices.

You noticed that the moot court trial teams who often come out on top are the ones from the crap law schools. It's not uncommon to read a moot court team from some crappy TTT law school beating out Harvard's moot court team.

I think also b/c students from crappy law school havelearned to hustle from early on and didn't have to rely on the safety net that is a law degree from a prestigious institution. The T14 law students can goof off and slack during their law schools years b/c they KNOW they can secure a fancy big law job in NYC, no matter how shitty their grades are or how inept their trial skills are. They make $160,000/year doing document review and pushing paper while law students from crappy TTTs often times are in court from the day they pass the bar and arguing motions and shit, even if the trials involve dog bites and shit.

To be fair, this is self-inflicted to an extent. If Asian parents are pushing their kids attending top schools to such an extreme degree, then as their numbers at those schools grow to way outpace their population you feel like the ones that didn't make it there despite all the striving.

Caltech is too small and doesn't have the prestige. Also, no business school.

largely cr

But in the right circles, it can be an incredibly impressive name to drop (e.g., certain grad school programs). Definitely not going to get you models and bottles, but it will generally catch the attention of people who actually matter.

Caltech is so small and specialized, it's hard to compare to other universities. It's like comparing Juilliard with HYP.

Why is this surprising at all? If he is interested in CS or engineering, it would be stupid to attend Harvard over MIT. And I'm probably not representative of the general public, but I'm much more impressed by CalTech grads than Harvard grads. Harvard admits a ton of legacies/affirmative action/athletes/other connected people, and it's possible to do some bullshit humanities major at Harvard while partying for four years. CalTech doesn't do legacies or affirmative action; you don't get admitted unless you are smart as fuck. And once you're there, everyone has to take high-level math and other crazy difficult classes. Sure, Harvard is impressive, but there are plenty of dumbs with Harvard degrees. There are very (if any) dumbs who graduated from CalTech.

Jesus, cal tech sounds absolutely miserable. Give me HUG+Connected+Humanities over that CS aspie shit. What good is a mountain of $$$ when the best years of your life were purely shitty.

Good. The fact that ppl like you will never attend Caltech is what allows it to keep its reputation. Even when people donate millions to Caltech, they don't ask for a spot for their kids (ie, development admits).

Fine by me. People like me put people like them to shame, HTH. Clearly you didn't experience HYPS UG, and are MAF. You didn't go to cal tech either, so I pity your aspie pipe-dream. Ask any normal person off of this board if they would prefer Caltech over HYP.

If you think that 4 years doing HUG humanities and having "the time of your life" (note: it isn't as awesome as you make it sound) is worth a significantly worse career trajectory, less money, less opportunities and less quality of life after age 22-23, then yeah turn down Caltech.

You seem dumb. My point was that I find someone with a CalTech degree to be more impressive than someone with a Harvard degree. Probably at least 30-40% of undergraduate spots at Harvard are filled by legacies/affirmative action/random rich kids. So probably at least 10-20% of Harvard grads (and that's being generous) are merely above average intelligence who had good connections. However, pretty much 100% of CalTech grads are smart as fuck.

It's people like you that make me not impressed by a Harvard degree. Harvard hands out plenty of degrees to legacies who just party for four years. That would never happen at CalTech.

Lol fine. You can be impressed by whomever you please, frankly that's not the point I was aiming for. From an IQ/Intelligence standpoint, yes, CalTech pwns HYPS. However, in terms of demeanor and QOL, I'd prefer HYPS hands down. In my experience, the CalTech kids are still aspie losers, just insanely qualified aspie losers.

I did that myself. I then went to the #1 PhD program in my field. I was done with all my schooling by age 24 with 0 debt and earning close to six figures. If you know that you want to go to grad school or medical/law school, turning down HYP for Big State is credited. You'll graduate with less debt and you'll have an easier time earning the high GPA needed for admission to an elite graduate program.
