If you're Asian, where you go to school is particularly important.
Like I said, actually Latinos outnumber Asian Americans at the Cal States, but the nicest things ppl in California say about Latinos are that they are "hard working."
But it's the East Asians who are seen as smart, financially successfully, and on top b/c we attend all the big name schools like Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, and USC.

Being Asian American, perception and prestige ARE a big deal.
It's cultural. And our hardass Asian American Tiger parents talk about how white people will only respect us if we went to an Ivy League school (or comparable, e.g. MIT, Duke, Stanford, etc.).
Part of why Asian americans are perceived as successful and the model minority is greatly attributed to the fact that Asian Americans went to Ivy League universities in high numbers.
If Asian Americans went to TTT schools, we wouldn't be that respected, particularly by the elite of society.
I mean, Latinos actually outnumber Asian Americans at most Cal States, yet Asian Americans are seen as the model minority b/c we outnumber everybody else in attending the schools that actually matter.

IT has to do w/ "perception" more than anything else.
There's the "perception" that East Asian who go to Ivies are automatically superior, e.g. Amy Chua and Tiger Mom.
Which unfortunately is backed up by some extent. You look up various East Asian people working in highly prestigious fields and I'd say 90 to 95% attended a highly ranked university. The ones who attended TTTs for undergraduate often went to Ivies for their MBAs and shit.
The two Chinese guys I knew from Wall Street who went to Rutgers both ended up getting their MBAs from Columbia and their salaries (and job titles) increased exponentially.

Yeah, there are exceptions to the rule...
Charles B. Wang

Went to Queens College and basically hustled his way to the top.
Also Kickstarter founder Perry Chen went to Tulane University (although not a bad school, still considered a TTT by East Asian standards).

No doubt about it.
The best trial lawyers I've met went to fourth tier law schools and are killing it in courts. They usually have their own practice or one or two partners at most.
There's some truth that some of the best lawyers attended the worst law schools b/c those toilet law schools really put their students through the wringer and force them to be trial lawyers and think on their feet. They KNOW they went to crappy law schools so they have a chip on their shoulder and are out to prove themselves with their solo practices.
You noticed that the moot court trial teams who often come out on top are the ones from the crap law schools. It's not uncommon to read a moot court team from some crappy TTT law school beating out Harvard's moot court team.
I think also b/c students from crappy law school havelearned to hustle from early on and didn't have to rely on the safety net that is a law degree from a prestigious institution. The T14 law students can goof off and slack during their law schools years b/c they KNOW they can secure a fancy big law job in NYC, no matter how shitty their grades are or how inept their trial skills are. They make $160,000/year doing document review and pushing paper while law students from crappy TTTs often times are in court from the day they pass the bar and arguing motions and shit, even if the trials involve dog bites and shit.

To be fair, this is self-inflicted to an extent. If Asian parents are pushing their kids attending top schools to such an extreme degree, then as their numbers at those schools grow to way outpace their population you feel like the ones that didn't make it there despite all the striving.
