cr.

The Plague was the best setting of mood in any novel I've ever read. The oppressive presence of the plague and the summer heat practically radiated off the page.

Camus is vastly overrated as a novelist. Valuable thinker for sure, but not much of a writer.

The good translation is the white and black paperback.

I thought it was good, but its not a book that needs to be universally defended. If you're not the type to enjoy specific lines, it might not be your thing.

The scene where he shoots the Arab on the beach is a pretty great scene IMO. I can't think of a murder scene in fiction that is comparable.

OK, now I'm about 2/3 of the way thru. I like it more than I did initially. Still not overwhelmed, but really I liked the old man with the dog storyline.

it's best read as a straightforward alienation story about how society judges you unfairly when you don't conform to bourgeois conventions. there's no message beyond that.

the whole bit about how he killed the guy on the beach for some obscure, existentially significant reason is stupid as fuck.

Camus was kind of a dopey guy, and had no real deep philosophical insights.

WTF is that really the point of it?

I thought the point was to put the reader in the mind of a sociopath? And Camus' point was that existence is a great assfucking for some people?

the existentialist classics are mind blowing to a college sophomore.

not particularly interesting for an adult with actual life experience.
