The kind of parental involvement that improves performance takes very little time. My old man made it clear that for every grade below an A, I would lose TV/Video Games/Car privleges and the like. Also, anything below a B was a guaranteed beating. It worked.

gee i better take this sociology/psychology/"neuroscience" study that showed up in the new york times as a guiding principle for my life choices despite knowing nothing about the disciplines in question and even less about the construction and methodology of actual scientific inquiry, notwithstanding the fact that this study - the conclusions of which are, curiously, perfectly suited to soothe the anxieties and ease the burdens of the NYT demographic - is doubtlessly in conflict with dozens of other published studies of similarly dubious rigor and will surely be superseded or contradicted by another study featured in this very same blog before the year is over

Well, there's enough evidence out there that the parental environment doesn't do much for long-term intelligence. Even the short-term influence isn't that high. To the extent school performance is just testing intelligence, this result isn't a surprise. On the other hand, I think everyone has experienced learning something faster or slower depending on how good the teaching is. Parents, in general, are probably not that good at teaching.
