Can anyone offer me any sort of tips or insights with regards to 3L hiring by biglaw firms.

I am a 2L at a top 20 school with a GPA around 3.5. Spent 1L summer in house at a bay area tech company and am spending my 2L summer in government.

I know it is early to be thinking about this but I just wanted to get some perspective on firms that hire 3L's and when I should start applying.

Thanks in advance.

You'll get in everywhere you apply!*

*But in all seriousness, it's almost impossible to get a BIGLAW offer as a 3L. There's almost no spots and there's an insane amount of competition. If you don't show up to the interview with an offer in hand from another somewhat respectable firm, your chances are essentially nil.

I've seen a few 3L job postings from big firms on my school's job board. It's there but there are so few postings that I imagine it's reserved for people with offers in hand looking to trade up.

Some firms did a lot of 3L hiring in recent years but they were booming. Not many firms are booming now.

Apply very broadly. I don't know about timing but I think July would seem reasonable? Ask career services.

You're about to be torn apart ITT but you may as well try.

Otoh if you don't get big law keep in mind you dodged a bullet. I am in big law and am beyond miserable. I'm just too risk averse to leave. This will be you if you get in.

3-5 years to get rid of it. then you kind of start at zero in every respect in building a real career/life (after wasting several years and probably compromising your health in the process)

Apply to latham they hire a ton of 3ls every year and it's pretty random hiring - they aren't selective at all. Know below median t14

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you're not flame. If this is a serious question, you have approximately a snowball's chance in hell of getting a 3L firm offer with those credentials. Just being real. As others on this thread have noted, these days 3L OCI is basically to allow people who have a firm offer in hand to try to trade up. Even people with excellent grades from HYS will have a hard time getting a 3L offer if they don't have an offer from their 2L firm. So the chances of someone around median at a T20 who didn't even work at a firm 2L summer landing a 3L offer are virtually nil. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, bro. I hope you weren't counting on biglaw money to pay down your debt, because if you were, you should give serious thought to dropping out now.
