Why would anyone ever go to Brown or Dartmouth?

I can't speak to Dartmouth, but Brown is credited. There's a reason that it has the happiest students out of any college in the country. Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey(founded by a Brown grad by the way), among others, all recruit there heavily. Med school placement is outstanding, and law and business placement is also excellent. Providence Equity Partners, one of the best PE firms in the country has its headquarters in Providence and scopes Brown grads for analyst and research positions every year. The best looking women in the Ivy league, plenty of Rhodes and Fulbrights, it's just a chill place to go for 4 years. Don't know why the school engenders such hate on this board, but it's unwarranted.

TBF, Dartmouth actually has a pretty notorious conservative paper, and considering how the news from there is shitlib hysterics about how "awful" it is, maybe it will actually have a greater share of chill fratty bros in forthcoming years.
But in terms of career stuff, yeah, no idea why you'd go there over a state school.

Quick, name a dozen schools better than Dartmouth.
Hey OP, what's your alma mater?

HYPSMC: Yes
Columbia: Probably
Chicago/Duke: I don't think so, but you could make a case
The rest range from "Nah" to "Not in a million years" (e.g. egregious Northwestern trolling).

Whatever, dude. I'll give you that Dartmouth is better than Rice. But it's definitely below Columbia, Penn, Chicago, and Duke. Indeed, I would rank it well below Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan as well, not to mention many other top-tier state schools (Washington, Wisconsin, and UNC jump to mind immediately; there are probably others). Dartmouth attracts good undergraduates because they want the Ivy name, but that's pretty much all it has going for itself. Dartmouth's business schools is respectable, but otherwise their faculty/graduate programs are SPS. Really, the only difference between Dartmouth and Northwestern is the fact that Dartmouth attracts better undergraduates as a result of their Ivy League affiliation. Both schools have decent undergraduates and decent business schools and not much else.

I thought we were only talking about UG. Kellogg is better than Tuck but it doesn't make Northwestern UG any better.
I would go to Berkeley/Michigan/UVA etc. over Dartmouth, but that doesn't make them better schools.
Not understanding what metric you could possibly use to put Penn over Dartmouth.

i hated dartmouth when i was there, but i have to say if your goal is law or finance, dartmouth would be better than the top state schools or other private schools like chicago/duke etc that people are mentioning above. UG recruiting is very strong into finance in NYC. around 15 dartmouth grads in my law school class which is way higher than cal/mich/uva people. tons of dartmouth grads at GSB/HBS/wharton and i'm sure proportionally a much higher percentage than from the top state schools. the alumni network is tight, which helps quite a bit for job searching.
can't speak for brown firsthand, but i'm sure it's similar or even better than dartmouth given its status for many years as the "hot" ivy. brown grads were all over HYS law schools. they don't seem as hot on finance, but prob b/c they attract more artsy hippies than finance douches which dominate the culture at dartmouth.
anyway, again depends on your career goals, but i've found the name definitely helped my way into HYS law school and the alumni network helped me later on in job searching.

JFK Jr. went to Brown and from what I understand he used to walk around his dorm/frat/apartment buck naked. So if you went to Brown you could have seen his big wiener and taut, muscular buttocks (probably slightly hairy, like his chest).
He's dead now, though, so...

The state school and non-ivy trolling on this board is ridiculous. This board wants to shit all over Brown and Dartmouth but in reality both are extremely selective and beat out almost any other non-HYPS university in cross-admits. The average high school valedictorian would jizz his pants to get into either school. You can make vague comments about faculty quality or whatever but it's laughable to put middling state schools like UCLA or Wisconsin in the same sentence with middle ivies where most of the kids are at least pretty smart with a fair amount of geniuses.
If you're looking for a more academic or rigorous undergrad experience, it's a lot more important to be surrounded by smart people (or at least non-retards) than to have a 1/100 shot of having a mentoring relationship with a well-known prof.
Most of Brown and Dartmouth I would classify as smart and there are very few true retards outside of the sports teams; compare that to these state schools where 80% of the class is from in-state and would not be competitive elsewhere.

(1) Brown and Dartmouth are not "middle ivies." They are undisputed the two worst ivy league schools.
(2) Just because a bunch of dumbass, myopic, prestige-obsessed 18-year-old strivers would rather be at Dartmouth than UCLA doesn't mean that Dartmouth is a better school than UCLA
(3) There are plenty of smart people at schools like UCLA, and if you so desire you can fairly easily associate solely with people of Dartmouth-level intelligence. The upside to being at big state schools is that if you ever get the weird urge to hang out with people who aren't intelligent, uptight assholes, you have that option as well.
Obviously there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to choosing a college, but I have a sneaking suspicious that bros who do CS at their state school with a full scholly end up having much more fulfilling lives than some striver who does Dartmouth -> GULC -> BIGLAW because he just loves to be "surrounded by smart people"

Dartmouth is sweet. You have to bear in mind it's basically a LAC. Great college town in a truly beautiful part of the country, tight-knit campus, awesome traditions, incredibly devoted alumni, outdoors shit, skiing, frats, best undergrad teaching. I never had a TA and most of my classes were really small. I go back any chance I get. I fucking love it.
This was not the experience of many of my friends who went to other "top tier" schools, for whatever that's worth.
