Three University of Delaware students have been arrested in connection with a home invasion that occurred early Saturday, Newark police announced Tuesday.
Twenty-three-year-old Ayrton Doerr, Andrew Lee, 21, and Jason Zimmell, 21, face charges of home invasion, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, assault, conspiracy and criminal mischief.
Investigators said the three students entered an unlocked apartment complex on Wrightstown Lane around 2 a.m.
They allegedly kicked through a locked bedroom door and attacked a 22-year-old man who was in the bedroom with a 20-year-old female resident. Police said the three suspects kicked and punched the man, then assaulted him with a candle jar.
Lee and the female victim were once involved in “a casual relationship” that had recently ended, according to investigators.
Police said the attack only came to a stop when the woman's roommate entered the bedroom and intervened.
The male victim, who also attends the University of Delaware, suffered a broken cheekbone and required multiple stitches and staples to close lacerations on his face and head, according to authorities. He was treated at Christiana Hospital and released.
All three suspects turned themselves into police Monday and were released from jail after posting $46,500 secure bail each. Each man was also issued a no-contact order with the male assault victim, as well as with the resident of the apartment that was allegedly targeted.
