Think about it: if your circle of friends is military, you are likely to be around a bunch of family values types that think an 8-5 PM job that let's you coach baseball is gold.

The people in my IBD division who were in the mil-vet program were fucking miserable. The reality is getting through West Point is nothing like working 8-11 PM consistently with no time to go to the gym or shoot the shit. These guys all rotated (washed out) to the back office at around a year. Ended up as ALPHA TRADE SETTLEMENT specialists working in Long Island. BIGGOVTCONSULTING is credited move.

Don't get me wrong, if you are in the CFO office at GOOG and you want a tech focused associate position in equity research or M&A you should be able to make it happen, but the people who have random IT or consumer products backgrounds and are trying to break into banking are not getting traction. As it is there are a lot of people with solid analyst experience who are getting shunted into industry for lack of associate / AVP type opportunities. Alternatively said, I think it is naive to go to HBS with a military or industry background and presume you are going to get a job with a blue chip bank (not just BB's but places like HSBC too) or MBB. The competition is stiff. The fact that you were able to do this for like a decade before the financial crisis was just a function of bubble conditions.
