hmm getting close. if you are in your 20's i would still pick mfh. way cooler city. if you are 30+ and not rich, probably DC. MFH is unlivably expensive, but DC is there too nowadays. MFH has much better transportation (driving in dc is godawful, and public transit is a nonoption unless you live right above a metro stop and take the subway to and from work). but your quality of life in MFH on less than 400k will be so low, especially if you actually work for a living, who the fuck cares.

It's not that I think GS-14 is a bad gig (I was being mean above), I would just struggle everyday in government work at a certain age. Get to 14, early 30s or something, the work gets repetitive, you're locked into DC and your fed gig, and then what? 30 years of the same? Still no guarantee you'll be a 15? I've seen so many perma-feds and there's just something dead about them.

I would need that little rabbit to chase, just a little bit, to make me want to go to work each morning.

I don't think I have the work ethic to survive in the private sector. I'm smart enough to be above-average at my BIGFED job, but the amount of work and the expectations of my managers are such that I can get by on mostly my intelligence alone.

I'm also cheap and lack expensive tastes, so I'm better equipped to survive on a GS-14 salary than somebody who needs to ball out of control at the club regularly and eat organic food.

Most importantly, though, I have the "work to live" mentality. I have ambitions, but those ambitions don't have to be at work. I'm perfectly fine doing something I'm not passionate about during 9-5 five days a week in order to fund my real passions during the weekends or in the evenings.

To me there are only 2 credited lifestyles:

1. work a job you dont care for in order to enjoy life (ie make enough so enjoy simple things but more importantly have the time/lack of stress to enjoy them)

2. work a job you really enjoy but the money can be whatever, the hours can be whatever

At least for the time being I will do neither but hopefully land in 1 or 2

DC has newer, larger housing stock. It is overpriced compared to almost anywhere in the country, but significantly more affordable than DC or SF.

It's common everywhere because DC doesn't have enough Metro Stations and never will. People walk 15 minutes in NoVA, in Bethesda, Silver Spring, etc., but the problem might be in DC at night...

you dont walk 15min everytime you want to go somewhere. there are normally places to eat, shops, stores, etc all within 5 min. you really only need to walk 15min to the metro if you are going to work or going to another part of town (which is same for NYC)

If work hrs were the same in both, MFH. If there's some sort of DC discount in terms of hours, DC. One of the worst parts of MFH is the live to work mentality.

Remember DC and MFH are both expensive because the young people are funded by mommy and daddy. Except, some of the poors in MFH are not. Literally everyone under 30 in DC in these places that cost $ are all from mom and dad it's horrible.

thats not why theyre expensive. nyc is expensive bc of liberalism and foreigners. dc is expensive bc there are 100's of 1000's of fake jobs plopped down there by the government. but yes, you can't really live there unless youre rich or you have a benefactor (parents or government).

lol NYC would be expensive regardless. if anything luxury condos with somewhat lower density are far more profitable for real estate doods than the current situation. nobody is going to knock down a couple blocks in hells kitchen and throw up super high density small apts because they can sell luxury 4brs for 10 million

I think DC is better for dating for a typical lawyer. If you're in BIGLAW, you're elevated in status/$ over the government guys and don't have the same financier competition you would in NYC. Even if not, the male competition is so staid and boring that it takes very little to distinguish yourself from the crowd and attract women.

NYC's big advantage is that the women are much hotter, so if you're more desirable you'll get better results.

So credited. In NYC every hot girl expects at minimum for her guy to have the time and money to take her the hamptons every summer weekend. On holidays they want turks & caicos. How many biglaw lawyers have enough financial stability and time for that? DC chicks think a basic new years bahamas vacation is something to brag about.
