Which is why all the old restaurant workers speaks Cantonese. If you learn Cantonese, your marketability as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant will improve greatly.

The problems with this plan are as follows:
1. Everything important (especially that a white would be allowed to touch) is still done in English 2. These kids have been studying English since they were young 3. There are legit bilinguals who will always be better than you are, and there are plenty of them 4. Even if you become conversant, learning business and legal language is another matter entirely 5. There is quite a bit of tribalism and they'll still likely never trust you 6. There are better uses of your time
Unless you're really dedicated and make the move to immerse yourself, the best that you'll probably do is learn enough to make your Chinese gf's parents giggle and nod (and her and her mom's panties wet). It's a really tough language that is very different from English; any asshole can become a Spanish hack pretty quickly. |
