Everybody in America is depressed as fuck and it's because their ability to develop into full adults has been prevented by hardcore capitalism.

Marx also said that eventually capitalism fails because the rich accumulate too much wealth so the rest of ppl overthrow the system and you end up with socialism. It is pretty interesting that we are seeing that in America.

he was right about alienation, wrong about revolution. proles no longer have an interest in owning the means of production- given a choice between a revolution that leads to no iphones and continuation of the status quo with a promise of incrementally better iphones, we're content to wait for an iphone with a bigger screen.

Has this been written about in a scholarly way? Marx wrote in a time when material comforts were limited, at best. We don't have scarcity issues thanks to technology. But we're alienated without the revolution. Seems ripe for analysis.

i'm sure you could measure the scholarship on this issue in yards, if not furlongs, but that's another problem: nobody fucking reads it. marx wrote a short, poetic pamphlet to inspire the very proles he assumed would be operating the guillotines; today we write dry incomprehensible shit for phd committees.

Exactly. But who reads serious Marx scholarship? Certainly not the proletariat. If they're consuming anything revolutionary, it's right-wing radio and reddit redpill shit.

The scary part is that postmodern capitalism has transcended the commoditization of products and services and has now rapidly commoditized human beings directly (see: Facebook, Tinder, etc.)

Humans used to be defined by the work of their hands and the substance of their spirit. Americans at least used to be defined by the commodities they consumed. You are now defined by the number of "friends" you have and the women in your area who want to fuck you. The commodity is you. The thin veil has been torn asunder, and behind it, we have seen The Beast. His name is Ego.

I would define "modern" as the optimization of systems and techniques that were largely Industrial, and "postmodern" as the melancholic plateau of economic prosperity creating new systems and processes that antagonize the old ones and generate self-hatred and metaphysical confusion in those who can't make the jump.

Makes sense to me. It's intelligible, at least. I prefer to stick to as large-scale, abstract forces/movements as possible, since they're comprehensive and always the simplest.

Also Americans are commodities at work. Their worth is determined by what corporations think they are worth on the job market. Whether they get healthcare, 401k, stable income, job security is all determined based on their value in the job market the same as the value of a pig is determined in a market.

That's not new though, that's just labor as a commodity, which is a big part of Marx and also Adam Smith for that matter.

It's credited to take Marx seriously even if you are not a Marxist. Marx had a lot of useful economic and social insights. He wasn't perfectly prescient and couldn't have imagined all the ways modern capitalism would develop, but he understood a lot and was brilliant.
