My school had what they called pre-AP classes through sophomore year, and I was pretty good at multiple choice English tests then, but I don't remember being good at essays. I lol'd hard when I got a 100 on our final and the #1 class rank kid got an 88 (LOL JUST LOL bc I only graduated magna, high school was a rough time for me).

Junior year English was AP. The summer reading was just The Great Gatsby. I loved the book, listened to the audiobook about 4 times before school started. I was getting 8s and 9s (on the AP essay scale) on our first few essays in the class, so it wasn't like the class was really making me a better writer, although I did get even better as the year went on. Got a 5 on the AP exam, 800 SAT writing. Easily one of my favorite classes in hs, behind only AP macro and government.

EDIT: I meant to say that the initial increase in skill wasn't because of the class, and I don't know where it came from exactly. I guess I'm not a good writer.

great thing about ep english in 11th grade is that i don't even recall spending too much time prepping for the exam. by the time the test came we were mostly just able to slide and let do.

My teacher took this incredibly chill approach for the exam. It was mentioned of course, but she never stressed us about it, she just focused on guiding us through the literature and everything felt so natural. I loved her, she wrote my recommendation for Georgetown.

my 10th grade honors english teacher had us do all these gay projects where we had to create posters and talk about our feelings.

she once gave us a massive test on a tale of 2 cities filled with vague questions about specific characters and events (it was too long a novel with too many characters for that sort of test). nearly everyone failed and we all had to get our tests signed by our parents. i don't think we ever even wrote papers on the book.

lol HS was so stupid. i'm going to homeschool my kids.

I pretty much never read the assigned reading until junior year. So easy to get by without it. Tbh any non-AP or IB class is a fucking joke unless you're at a really good school, and being an advanced class is necessary but certainly not sufficient. My kids are going to Exeter or Sidwell or something like that, fuck my prole education.
