I don't think literal all-nighters are that common. There is plenty of "let's all go home around 2 and circle back together around 9:30 tomorrow" stuff though.

Rare. Like once every 6 weeks or so.

But lots of leaving at 2 or 3 am and comign back at 900 am. after 2 or 3 days of that you're pretty fucked up.

It's like that scene in Annie Hall except the associate is a hostage.

Partner: We rarely make the associates pull all nighters, no more than once every six weeks.

Associate: The partner says that I rarely pull all nighters, no more than once every six weeks. He also points out, correctly, that the regular nights on which I get two to three hours of sleep cannot be called all-nighters due to the word all.

Let's take last Thursday as an example.

I twiddled my thumbs until about 630. Then we got a markup back from the other side. The client wants to review our proposed response on a flight on Saturday. Partner needs to review before then and we need time to turn the partners comments.

Accordingly, we had to stay until 4 am to get the revised draft done and on the partners desk by morning.

during an M&A deal? Same shit you do doing the day. Drafting ancillary contracts, collecting signature pages, negotiating the final sticky points in a deal, revising disclosure schedules...etc..

Usually the biz guys want to announce signing (or closing) before opening bell so you are usually scrambling between 3am and 8:30am making sure that all has been agreed to and signed off. Then you have a call in the am and its done.

Then you crash and then wake up to an email putting you on a new deal that is set to close in week.

Good Times.
