I would say this is the best argument for Columbia over NYU. Without a real contacts story you're not going to do well in e.g. Texas or California unless you have grades to spare. Not sure how this shakes out post-ITE; I have a sense that even Columbia and Chicago are more like this now and NYU is less and less relevant outside of NYC with the drastically smaller summer class sizes.

WTF is the shit on this thread? All law schools are regional to a degree other than maybe Y. Getting a Chicago job out of S is almost impossible and DC is brutally tough. Even NYC isn't easy if your grades are mediocre. Can you find a job in California if you are coming out of CCN/lower T14's/whatever? Sure, if your grades are high enough. Should you count on it? No. No law school (with the possibly exception of Y) can guarantee you a job in any major market.

And don't even get started on secondary markets. Ties matter much more than pedigree for those markets, and a HYS degree can actually work against you. I had a friend who attended HYS and had owned a home a secondary market for 10 years before she went to law school (and continued to own it while she was in law school). She mass mailed every major firm in the city. It resulted in two callbacks, both of which grilled her about ties for the entire interview. "Why would a HYS graduate want to work here? Normally we only hire from the local schools. We want associates who have lived here their whole lives and have all their family here." Apparently owning a home for 10 years in the market wasn't a strong enough tie.

TLDR: No law schools are truly national. If you want to have the flexibility to work in any part of the country, don't go to law school. (Actually, that's good advice generally, but it's particularly important if you don't want to be restricted to a certain geographic area.)

No, my friend did not get an offer from either callback in her home market. The firms really seem to only want people who lived in the state their whole lives and attended the local T1. And getting a NYC job out of S is not easy if you are below median. Sure, it's a piece of cake if your grades are decent, but the top-ranked NYC firms (who tend to have the larger class sizes) generally won't callback anyone who isn't at least median. If you're below median and you want NYC, you're stuck bidding on lower-ranked firms with small class sizes and the process becomes a crap shoot. I've known people below median who got no callbacks in NYC. And if you're potentially fucked in NYC if you're below median, DC is significantly worse.

And for whatever reason almost no Chicago firms do OCI at Stanford, and the ones that do usually send people from their other offices. There is a bro who poasts the number of Chicago associates from each top-ranked law school every year. I can try to find the thread, but my recollection is that there were something like 5 SLS associates in all of the major Chicago firms last year. (Not 5 first-year associates, but 5 associates period.) Maybe that's self-selection because nobody wants to move to Chicago after living in Palo Alto for three years; I have no idea. But the point remains that SLS places essentially no one in Chicago most years.

CCN needs contacts, I think. If you show up to the interview and run some bullshit about an aunt who lives in San Diego LA firms will hold it against you. From CCN you should make up shit about family living in the city where you want to go. With that, though, it helps, or at least it used to back in the day. E.g. BigTexlaw gave a solid bonus to CCN over non-L.Rev. UT. Same for Biglaw in LA, less so in SF, but mainly bc there are way fewer jobs and S + Boalt right in town.

T6 with a little less national prestige for NYU makes sense.

OP wants "public sector" work so it's a no brainer for GULC if you can't get into HYS and maybe Columbia.

That's it. The point about local ties is dead on. Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta, big legal markets are still provincial as fuck about ties.

Schools become regional quickly. However, that's largely if you're looking to have the school name do all the work for you.

You graduate from any of the Top 50 schools at the top of your class and get a decent clerkship and you can travel well.
