Do you really think you were important enough for your employer to take the time to carefully document every task you did over a substantial period of time? And then to save that list after you left? And then to dig it out of his files and carefully cross-reference it with your resume, point by point?

I would generally agree with all of this up until about third year or so. After that, be very careful exagerrating experience - especially in somewhat specialized areas. A dude lateraled into my firm as a fifth year. We were very, very busy and he was given a bunch of stuff to work on right away. It was obvious that he wasn't at the level that his resume/interviews indicated. The two main partners in the group had him fired three weeks in. They were pissed. He was a nice guy too - it wasn't that he wouldn't have fit in. The firing was based purely on resume padding. His old firm wouldn't take him back, because he left them on almost no notice. He went from v50 to v10 to small city midlaw in two months. I'm not saying stuff like this happens very often, but I have seen it happen.

I was unemployed for almost a year back in 2009. My resume said, "Speaks, reads, and writes conversational Spanish."

I took four years of high school Spanish 20 years ago so that was a lie. My conversation was pretty much limited to "Mi nombre es Chilmata. Tengo un perro."

With less than a month left on my UI, I interviewed for this shitlaw firm in a shit area on the fringes of San Diego County. The second interview was conducted in Spanish and I bombed it. He told me he wanted to hire me, but he needs someone to speak Spanish. I was going to be interviewing incarcerated clients that don't speak English and getting crucial facts from them in the beginning of the case.

I begged the dude for a 30-day tryout, promised I wouldn't watch or listen to anything in English until I was fluent in Spanish. He called me later that day and gave me the job which I had for three years until my latest firm poached me from them.

If you went to an obscure branch campus, just put down "University of Texas" or "University of North Carolina" on your resume, omitting the city name. They won't use your resume to check this info, they'll have you fill out an application for HR. Put the full university name down on this application (which the hiring manager won't see)
