It is fucking TERRIBLE though. Or maybe it's just my firm/dept considering I bill on average 2300 a year whereas the average biglawyer barely works. It's not just the hours though. The associates I work with are awful, awful sociopaths who likely grew up poor or with a huge chip on their shoulders. They are obsessed with "prestige" and "money" and completely unsociable. I dont think these people have friends. |

Your S/O's family can either explicitly bankroll by loaning you money or implicitly bank you by buying you a house. If you are engaged and do transactional work, you need to start leveraging your soon to be in-laws' connections for a sweet in-house job. Almost no one in this day in age has substantial wealth without having connections in industry.
With your middle class background, you may be scrappy. If you have some sales abilities, are not in a T1 city, and your S/O's family has a substantial amount of wealth, you should consider a wealth management position. You could survive managing your S/o's family's money, and leverage their social network to expand. One of my bros did this after burning out in his engineering job, and he is absolutely killing it. Makes ridiculous amounts of money. |

Even more good news, it will take at least six months to fire you, and you'll get three months severance, and you don't even have to explain to employers why you're leaving. I left in year 4, and it took about six months to start sleeping normally again and I had a little biglaw Stockholm syndrome, but I can't tell you how much better my life is now. I'm much less of an asshole and I probably put off my first heart attack by 20 years. |

I remember dreading every fucking Sunday while in Biglaw. I landed at a comfy boutique firm doing plain vanilla fund work. Nothing exciting, but it is a great environment. Although, it does have its cons: (1) averaging 100 hours per month has me worried the firm is not financially sound; (2) small office politics; (3) crappy benefits; etc. But, I get paid a decent amount and I am normally out by 5:00 and able to leave work at the office. The problem is now that I don't feel like I am being used to my best potential, so I get the urge to quit this place and do something of my own. There are only so many PPMs you can do until it becomes a basic fill in the blank document. TL;DR: Biglaw is shitty. Your current sentiments are on point.
