They never get the fired thing. I told them repeatedly for over a year I was waiting to get fired with severance from one bigfirm. Then when it finally happened, they still all acted shocked and horrified.

Still odd they don't understand it. Just imagine that it is GM constantly downsizing, but those who are cut get a big severance.

They seem to be of the get a job at a factory and stick around for 40 years mindset. So, naturally, losing such a job could seem quite devastating.

There's no right way to approach this. I just say it's awesome an move on as quickly as possible. I used to tell the truth but everyone treats you as if you are some diva WR making 10 mil and asking for the ball. No matter how miserable you are, you will not draw sympathy from family members who have 2 kids a mortgage they can barely service and a salary they've worked up to that's half as big as yours.

People who actually have a life are unable to comprehend what it's like to not have one.

I call my family from my car on the way home from the office at like 10 or 11pm. Without fail, my father always asks me how hard I am working even though he knows. It is sort of funny and sad at the same time.

I gave a cousin honest advice about not going to a TTT law school and he told the rest of the family that I was a completely miserable overworked suicidal addict fake veneer lying underperforming fatally ambitious saggy eyed paper pusher and I still haven't convinced them otherwise. He sold me out and didn't know he was right but he was right.

I used to go into it, but the proles (i.e. everyone but my parents, sadly) thought and still think that it's some normal 9-5 office job, and the whole thing is so foreign to them that they'd never understand bullshit like all-nighters, 24/7 availability demands, Citrix, wet wiping armpits and changing undershirt in office, etc. that I've just given up. Now it's "yeah, pretty busy but fine I guess," and I quickly move on. They still don't have a clue as to why I left flyover when there are lots of "rich" lawyers back home and ask me all kinds of questions about criminal cases in the news and stuff.

My dad is a boomer professional who maed it, and just thought that if I stuck around I'd make partner. Getting canned during ITE made it clear to him that things have changed dramatically since the 70s/80s and that I wasn't exaggerating the long odds, so he finally gets it and no longer goes into stuff like "if you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life!"

my parents know it sucks, but they try to pretend like i'll be the one who makes it or i'm somehow learning useful shit.

so i'll tell them i'm super busy and they'll say, well, at least you're learning something! and then i'll be like, yeah, i'm learning how to QC binders prepared by paralegals and standardize references to defined terms because I'd have to double-check anything the paralegals do anyway so i may as well just do it myself.
