Also easier to get on an athletic team. If you want to stay on the east coast, the coastal LACs, for as much as XO makes fun of them, are still respected and better than the state Us.
What I never understood is why an 18 y/o kid wants small classes. Who the fuck cares? You are there to get a diploma and high GPA for whatever purpose. Small classes with a ton of extra work and requirements on your time to show up and whatever? It just seemed to be really dorky and not at all strategic in terms of playing the GPA game. |

professors get to know the kids more, easier to pay attention, and professors invariably teach the material better (as opposed to pure powerpoint slides you'd get at the local state u) |

But let's cut the crap: no 18 y/o HS dork makes his decision to attend a LAC because "small classes have better curves." They like the small classes BS because of some normative value placed on learning from LAC profs. Not only do these kids, in my experience, end up learning nothing different than people from large classes, but there's an emphasis on participation and attendance and being a faggot extrovert that isn't CR for all types of people.
I would fucking hate being in an 8 person class at age 19 when I'm just trying to figure out living on my own, girls, partying, what the heck to major in. Shit. |

And professors differ from their pedagogy in small classes. Some acknowledge that the requirement to participate, by raising thy hand, asking questions, may be taxing to the undergraduate. Hence, some professors encourage their students to participate in other ways, like posting questions on their school's discussion boards, emailing the professor, or assigning reading responses. |

I was at a wedding and this girl from a T20 LAC said she hates her law school because of the "public school kids" that attend with her. It's a third tier school. I pressed her for more details and she said that the writing skills of the "public school kids" makes her school bad.
Bending over backwards to create a fantasy of the oafish prole state U and the classy intellectual cultural elite LAC ...
reality: LAC kids drink beer and party and do the same shit state U kids do and they almost all end up in the same jobs
of course we need to be comparing the same type of schools, like a top public to the better LACs; clearly I would not prefer my child attend the University of Oklahoma over a top LAC if we can afford the latter. But I would rather have my kid attend the University of Michigan or University of Wisconsin over Macalester College, for example. Most people on xo probably agree with that, but the Macalester kid intrinsically believes they are better people because they attended a small college with selective admission. It's silly. |
