It was pretty good. Really compelling and exciting to watch, but it's very much a Linklater movie so it wanders and meanders.

Getting a shotgun and a bible for your birthday is pretty 180.

I saw it three weeks ago and I am still thinking about it.

It sounds silly or overblown to say it is a transformational film, but it has at least changed the way I think about movies in a way that hasn't happened to me since I was a kid. It's not for everyone, but it's one of those movies that I think less of people who don't like it.

Agree with you but I think I am losing a bit of reverence for the fact that it was filmed over 12 years. TV shows often film with the same casts over 7-12 or more years. It's not a common film device but it still makes you think about how much of the story is enhanced by the meta narrative going on as you see the cast aging over time.

If the same movie was made in 1 year instead of 12 with different actors playing the kids would you still think it was brilliant?

No. I'd think it was a pretty good, pretty Linklater film, but not mind-blowing.

First of all, Mason is kind of a boring dickbag. When he was driving off to college, I asked myself why I even cared about this kid so much, and I realized it was because I really felt like I had seen him grow up as an actual person and not a trick of makeup or clever casting.

Second, I don't think it would be possible to recreate the film over the period of one year. It's fucking pitch perfect on the small details that would inevitably feel just a little bit off or too called out if it were made like a traditional film- things like cars, clothes, and technology would be the result of choices made by the art director or set dresser to recreate a time, rather than contemporaneous choices or happenstance. The cell phones, for example, or the Mama for Obama lady, or watching the drunk baby landlord vid feel natural- curated, maybe, but not constructed.

That relates to a criticism I've heard form people that didn't like the film that bothers me- they hate Mason's facebook moralizing and somehow think that it's a key to the film. It isn't- it's just a reflection of how people were thinking about facebook a year or two ago; it's not the key to the film or even all that important, it's the equivalent of Mason Sr.'s dumb anybody-but-Bush speech early in the film.

So yeah, the passage of time is the thing that makes Boyhood great, and maybe any director could have stumbled into that idea, but they didn't.

Linklater is the only one who seems to understand that people have a hunger for this kind of realism. I bet a lot of directors had the idea but thought it was too boring/pretentious

True. I talk about this film too much, and more than one person has said something along the lines of "if you give this idea to 10 other directors, 9 of them would make a better film." I doubt it. I doubt they could have avoided clichés like showing each year passing with a title card or shot of a calendar, or shoe-horning in all the important growing-up milestones, or giving Mason a teddy bear or some other totem he carries with him the whole time, or trying to make some kind of statement about life by connecting some dots from his childhood in the end, or a dozen other hack film tropes that would have made the gimmick of the film just seem like a cute idea.

yeah that's spot on. i really like how they didn't make him into anything special. he excels at something but they don't give him some ridiculous challenge narrative. they don't zoom in on whatever anguish he has. at the age we see him, he's confused, inconsistent, and quietly trying to make sense of the ordinary world like kids do. i said it in another thread, but a worse movie would have the ethan hawke character continually letting mason down and being a shit father forcing mason to become his own man. that doesn't happen, it's just a phase in his and his dad's life

I feel like the 12-year process let him cheat a little bit, because he didn't need to use the plot, such as it is, to make the whole thing hang together as a coherent film. he could just let stuff happen, so instead of "boy gets called a faggot in the bathroom, overcomes bullying and emerges as a fabulous butterfly who makes his bully fall in love with him," that scene is just something that happened. Makes a lot of other coming-of-age films seem like contrived bullshit in comparison.

Wasn't that the point? There are no over-the-top epiphanies or cathartic moments. People are complicated. You are an asshole one moment in your life, get bullied in another moment, and exhibit great talent in another moment. There's nothing in life that strings it all together. The sum of the parts is what life is and who you are.

Another example is when he gets invited to the party by that girl. We don't see what happens at the party. That's not what's important.

made you wonder why the hell Ethan Hawk and Patricia Arquette's characters couldnt stay together
