Anyone have any recommendations? I've always just had the basic $40 routers when I had an apartment.

Are these routers that cost $150 to $250 worth it? Will they actually be better?

Get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1900-Gigabit-Router/dp/B00F0DD0I6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1407891165&sr=8-1&keywords=blackhawk+router

And then get wifi extenders for dead zones.

Should last 5 years. I have a 5 year old netgear router and it works fine. I don't know how to answer your second question. But it is the best router out there. Just got released, so that is at retail. Wait a bit and it will drop in price.

No. A boomer would walk in to a store like Office Depot and grab the nearest pizza-faced store employee and demand to be told about routers. They ask some stupid questions and eventually purchase the 2nd most expensive option (not getting up sold by this faggot!). Then they take it home and immediately call a nephew or grandchild or neighbor kid and demand the kid install and configure the router for $5.

We're in similar spots, brah, except your house sounds a bit bigger than mine. I like to watch netflix on my porch & shit, and I've fucked around with my wireless signal so that I can watch full-HD netflix anywhere in my house.

You have some options here.

The most effect solution for the amount of effort involved is get a decent router and then set up a powerline network to connect some additional access points. This is what I do. There's really no way I could cover my back yard and all of my house with one router, no matter how badass.

Cheapest/laziest solution is to get a bunch of wireless "range extenders." I tried a couple different brands, and they sucked ass. Don't do this. They never work for more than a couple days before you have to reset them.

Best practices solution would be to have someone wire your house with CAT-6 cable. The advantage is that CAT-6 can always support gigabit speeds, whereas my powerline network advertises ~500mbps, but doesn't seem to get anywhere close to that.

Right now, my internet is 50mbps, so it doesn't really matter that my network maxes out around 80mbps, but if Google Fiber ever branches out to the rest of Texas from Austin, it's going to be my bottleneck.

I have this thing called a ZyXel extender - it doesn't seem to help at all (linked below). Is what you posted just completely different?

That's different.

That takes the wireless signal and boosts it.

The links I posted work like this: http://kbserver.netgear.com/media/images/answer_18748/xavn2001_img1.png

They use your power lines to transmit data between the two boxes.
