Usually it happens something like this:
Interviewer: Tell me about your grades in school
Interviewee: [bragging about his 3.9 GPA]
Interviewer: why wasn't it higher?
I think its alpha to immediately hit them with that "why not even higher?" right after people finish bragging
Also, I think it is a legit question to ask because it tests for self-awareness of one's limitations, ability to look back, ability to take criticism, etc. You can tell a lot about a candidate by how they answer it.
