I think they make most of their money with the referral fees they get for the cases after comp is over -- in NY anytime someone falls off a ladder on a jobsite they can sue the property owner and recover a million dollars pretty much.

In my state "referral fees" aren't allowed but there are ways around it -- mainly co-counsel agreements that the client doesn't give a shit they're signing.

didn't know this bro, for say a big divorce then does the client bill have to show the hours you work, or is it good enough if you "counseled with" the other attorney and you take a percentage?

The ladder thing is the NY Scaffolding Law, right? I remember that from the bar exam. That's not worker's comp. That's PI.

It's such a shitty practice that even the shitlaw firms that do employment law on contingency typically won't touch it. Worker's comp and SS disability cases are the bottom of the shitlaw barrel. I'd throw in handling family court cases on the 18b panel with that probably.

You can make money doing anything, but it is a shitty practice. Very high volume. Very shitty client base.

Aren't these cases as close to open and shut as it gets? And they don't drag on either, not a bad way to pick up 5-10k at a time. 2-3 new cases a month and you're pulling 100k+

Please cease this faggotry at once!

Work Comp is, was, always will be SHITLAW anywhere and everywhere

If you're on the Petitioner side, you're an ambulance chaser dealing with lowlife clients and fucktard opposing counsel/penny-pinching insurance companies

If you're on the defense side you will bill out at $125 per hour and haggle over whether a letter is 0.2 or 0.1 or only billable at the paralegal rate.

If your JD is from JMLS, you should promptly wipe that stain off your resume and then seriously consider commencing KILLSELF operations
