The Judiciary Act of 1789 created the Office of the Attorney General which evolved over the years into the head of the Department of Justice and chief law enforcement officer of the Federal Government. The Attorney General represents the United States in legal matters generally and gives advice and opinions to the President and to the heads of the executive departments of the Government when so requested. In matters of exceptional gravity or importance the Attorney General appears in person before the Supreme Court. Since the 1870 Act that established the Department of Justice as an executive department of the government of the United States, the Attorney General has guided the world's largest law office and the central agency for enforcement of federal laws.

How the fuck does Eric Holder have the power to enforce the laws during a riot?

Is he in Ferguson on a fact-gathering mission, and does he plan to file an emergency injunction in the 8th circuit?

I have no idea. That is the point of the thread. The AP says that Holder is going "to meet with federal law enforcement authorities investigating the police shooting of an unarmed teenager" and that he "recently authorized a federal autopsy on the body of Michael Brown."

How does he have authority to order autopsies? How does he have authority to control police investigations? He is a fucking attorney tasked with bringing lawsuits on behalf of the United States.

This is a state police power issue, through and through.

I get that Holder could file a lawsuit based on civil rights violations.

I'm asking what the fuck he is doing in Ferguson right now. Is he there to file a lawsuit?

Right, he can prosecute crimes.

He can also travel there and tell what cops to do? Does he control how the National Guard responds to the rioters?

I just don't get it. Is he there to write a brief?

Does he investigate crimes or does he prosecute crimes? Is he going to manage the FBI and give them advice on how to analyze gun powder residue?

That is what I don't get. Its weird as fuck to send the acting attorney general to a locale stricken with martial law. He's a fucking lawyer, not a general or a police officer.

you do realize that as the chief federal law enforcement officer, the AGOTUS has the power to direct how federal investigations proceed, right?

the AGOTUS is in the presidential line of succession, for crying out loud (albeit relatively low on the list); what makes you think he doesn't have any power when it comes to the federal government and the enforcement of federal law?

Holder can, on a whim, hale any asshole in that town into federal court on a civil or criminal charge. And by any asshole I mean cops, rioters, local politicians—anyone. He also just happens to be tight with the president, who wields tremendous political power and could literally destroy any one of these assholes careers, and probably their lives, particularly if they happen to be in politics or government. And that's just the first couple of things that come to mind.

You really can't understand why some rinky dink local authorities would fear the attorney general of the fucking united states?
