I've gotten xanax prescribed for past 7 years. Say you went to ER once because you thought you were going to die. Your heart was racing and you were sweating and shaking and all you could think about was that you were going to die. Once at ER they looked at all your stuff and did all these tests and doc said it is probably something called panic disorder.
You googled panic disorder and you have all the symptoms. Doc recommended you go so psych. You didn't want to be "on a pill" so you didn't go for a while (so psych your at now can't be like "can you bring doctor rec?"). But now it's affecting your life (you don't go out because you're afriad of social situations, you get random panic attacks, usually 2-3 times/week).
Say you want to get on something long term and something for the panic attacks. Say they gave you xanax at the ER (you aren't sure how much) and got one from a friend once (who, when you asked, said it was 1mg) when you had a panic attack and it worked.
You would like doc to prescribe you something to deal with problem in long term (SSRI...which you'll get prescribed and fill but never take...trust me, I've taken and they suck) and in short term (xanax).
Also helps to say you're a consultant who flies a lot and uses them occasionally for flights. This might get you more than you would for a "case by case" panic attack (might only get 10mg). If you say you fly and have huge fear of flying you could say you take 1.5mg/flight and fly twice a week. Will bump you up closer to 30mg/month, which is where you're going to top out unless you find a shady doc.
