their cases are pretty high-end. so if you are asking if there are lit boutiques in every major city that focus on criminal work, then, well, the answer is yes.

fewer hours than biglaw, probably get some interesting experience. but if you don't make it to USAO, what can you do next? Can't make WCC your practice anymore without federal gov experience.

Yeah, its not bad at all. Even though being an AUSA is ideal for white collar criminal defense, you have to take a big pay cut from BIGLAW, if you are lucky to become an AUSA ($110k?). Boutique white collar criminal defense seems ideal.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Boutique white collar firms are filled with associates that want to become AUSAs. If they miss out - which many do, even with their stellar credentials - they don't have very many options. A boutique won't make you a partner without fed gov experience anymore either.

for most people in competitive districts like SDNY or CDCal, it's a credential - kind of like a clerkship. They do their stint and lateral back to private practice.

For others, esp in flyover, it's an end game. A job where you make decent money (maybe top out around 150), is prestigious, and have a fair amount of autonomy.

Does experience as a federal defender carry the same weight as AUSA? From what I've heard they get tons of trial experience.

there isn't the same revolving door between fed defender and private practice that there is for big-city USAOs. Whether this is because federal defenders are more likely to be true believers, or because the experience is not valued as highly, i do not know.

How about as a retired cop? You think they can do well/make partner in firms like these without AUSA work? I know a few evening school doods who were cops
