It's just a good story, a piece of high art, some melodrama in which we can luxuriate to escape from our humdrum lives.

It seems crazy that it took so long for someone to wonder, "What if there was an undercover cop in a mob that had planted a cop in the police force?" And then it took way too long for Hollywood to rip that guy off.

You're giving Hollywood way too much credit. The Departed is very loosely based on the events surrounding mob boss "Whitey" Bulger who was both gangster and informant and did indeed have an FBI agent on the inside.

They just needed an American story that could match and glommed on to Bulger. Highly recommend the original by the way. Much of it was copied verbatim, but the action and acting is really really good.

there are a few scenes or plot lines in the departed that are useful as metaphors/examples in casual conversations- the pop bottle assassination scene, nicholson's lieutenant's suicide in the burning car, the elevator scene, and the end. but none are exactly iconic, on the level of the usual suspects or the godfather.

The progression of Scorsese from ground-breaking independent filmmaker to mainstream Hollywood director is depressing. He peaked with Raging Bull and since then it's been a slow but steady decline. After Casino, he was fully Hollywoodized.
