I feel like a freshly minted 2nd Lieutenant being dropped into a hot LZ during Vietnam. I think the life expectancy was 16 minutes being for being blown to bits by friendly fire or Charlie.

Amazingly, you will look back fondly at your first two years of practice and miss having such a stress free life.
No one expects anything from you other than competence.
You are not in charge of anything. Don't act like you are and don't volunteer to be.
Don't volunteer for anything other than billable work.
If everyone is doing something, also do that thing.
Don't stand out for any reason other than: competence, attentiveness, clarity, conscientiousness.
Don't share gossip; you can learn gossip.
Exercise daily. Play in sports leagues with late games or weekend play.
Don't date too often.
If married, focus on that person over everything other than your job. Bring her into your world and make her a partner on which you can rely.
Get to the office early. Your most productive hours will be 7a-930, 1130-1, 530-7.
Automate things like cleaning, dry cleaning, laundry, basic shopping.
There are a lot more that are good tips, but for a first year I recommend this book:

How do I build relationships with partners? Do good work for their associates and hope word floats upwards? Or reach out to partners to introduce myself? Guess the question is how do I build relationships with partners while not pissing off the mid level associates or senior associates who are their pets? |

It starts ramping up by 4th/5th year -- if it doesn't, then there's something wrong and you should consider exiting
some of it can be adjusted, like getting to the office early; you can be a work late/weekends type if you prefer
volunteering for biz dev opportunities also doesn't hurt |

doing a three week doc review? guess what. you didn't bill 9 hours a day checking out the batches. you billed 11.
if you do it properly, you can easily pull an extra 100-200 hours. think that may be helpful? |
