1) Are the rent-a-cops allowed to try and physically restrain the thief? 2) Are they allowed to then brutalize him? 3) Is the thief saying he was defending himself with the knife a good legal defense? |

I don't think shoplifting is a breach of the peace. But there's common law regarding recapturing chattels and statutory stuff about shopkeeper's privileges that I don't know much about. |
