Typically, I tell people to stay away. But my brother's friend is about to retire from the NYPD and was thinking of doing CUNY law. He wants to go solo eventually. Money won't be an issue since he has that pension and cuny is cheap...and practical. I mean, they do a lot of clinics and stuff; things you need to know to practice irl.

Thoughts?

Sure, why not. If you're going to LS cheap, with an income source that will continue through LS and even afterward, there's not much to lose. I still wouldnt do it because he has to be a lawyer afterward and will be hustling for crim defense clients in NYC, which sounds like a nightmare, but it's not going to ruin his life or anything.

Just spoke to him again. He might be doing NYLS with $$$. He hasn't applied yet, but apparently one of the deans is offering him $ if he does PT. seems quite unusual for schools to be doing outreach to potential applicants who haven't applied yet; he just cold called the admissions office and the asst dean spoke with him. Is his normal in TTT?

lol NYLS is probably hurting bad for applicants just like the other TTTT schools. ljl at the assistant dean rushing to the phone to throw money at a cold-calling potential applicant

and "NYLS with $$$" may not mean much when the sticker price is around $50k/year. $20k/year scholarship? Whoopdee-doo.

You cant go solo right out of school because drafting a motion in some clinic is not preparing you to handle trials. Clinics are flame. Trial and deposition skills take hundreds of hours of practice to build. Its like learning to play the piano. A 20 or 40 hour clinic doesnt get you anywhere near where you need to be to ask people to pay you to play.

It takes better part of 3-5 years of actual practice to turn baby lawyers into the real thing. Fresh out, you are like my 8yo on the piano.

So, the real question is who the hell is going to hire your 50yo friend with NYLS or CUNY on his resume? Apart from the huge age discrimination he is going to face his degree is toilet paper.

It's all good, man. Lemme give you the scoop. Shitlaw steve clawed his way up into an Of Counsel type position at a firm via the ranks of several shitlaw firms. As a shameless striver with an inferiority complex, he has an enormous amount of contempt for small firms, solo practice, etc. He can always be found in a thread like this claiming that solo practice is basically impossible, because it bugs him that people with so little prestige can actually make a living. Also he likes to try and distance himself from the types of practice that he used to be involved with.

let's not forget that at one hof his first jobs. a walk-in potential client took a diarrhea dump in the waiting room of his firm's converted-doctor's-office office. now, steve is a partner and Stern & Montana. oh and the client? his name was albert Einstein.

Tyvm for this scholarship. I can't believe I had it completely backwards. How typical and striverish. The dude is like a white trash princess who married into money.

You mean the offices that get 3000 applications for every single job?

Solo crim practice requires experience as an actual lawyer. His cop experience is irrelevant.

He should really cop a 3 year internship in a crim law practice so he at least has an inside track on being hired there or getting some experience. Shitlaw crim attys are always looking for free law students to exploit.
