The argument hereof — http://chroniclevitae.com/news/703-after-ferguson-some-black-academics-wonder-does-pursuing-a-ph-d-matter — is that scholars, PhDs, and PhD students should, as a result of Ferguson, become more like activists: vehemently "fighting" the perils of racism, prejudice, and ignorance thereof.
But the work of a scholar ought to be objective. Their role in this world is very specific, but one of the most important: seeking knowledge through research. One is unlikely to accomplish that with an activist mindset.
