i mean, i think they signed the contract before he got hurt, bro. plus hes got a huge fan base and they probably considered it partially compensation for services already rendered. but even at the time people thought it was a horeshit deal for the lakers. they basically didn't want to see their franchise player go storming off at the end of his career. sort of like how the yankees have been paying jeter the past couple years, just to see him go out in pinstripes.
