The year they lost to the Spurs because Amare and Diaw were suspended (06 or 07) they were pretty clearly the best team in the league and had a clear path of easy shit to the championship (Utah and Cleveland, I believe). Kurt Thomas was their low post defensive specialist and didn't clog things up on offense because he just hung out and took 12 foot set shots. They actually ran plays for Shaq which should have been for Amare.
Also consider they gave up Marion to get Shaq. The Suns gambled on Shaq being a Duncan-stopper (the only reason they ever bothered with having a real center) and it turned out he was worse at it than Thomas. |
