Incoming big law associate (mid Oct. start, large market & large office, litigation or regulatory practice). I'll need to travel some weekends to visit long-distance GF. I'm also supposed to attend a wedding on the Saturday following my first week on the job.

Wondering whether i should anticipate working weekends during my stub year? Would you advise booking refundable plane tickets? Any relevant knowledge or anecdotes are appreciated.

the wedding is fine. that's a one-time thing. plus, you're not gonna need to work a saturday your first week. and if they try to make you work on a saturday, just tell them to fuck off. clearly they could find someone else.

If you want to stay 3+ years, cancel all trips.

If you are okay with lateraling out in two years, feel free to travel on weekends and turn down work.

Depends on the firm. The wedding is fine, and while you'll most likely be fine working remotely the rest of the time, I wouldn't count on it. As the most junior person, you will be expected to do random grunt work, which may include things like checking stuff that comes back from the print center for errors, for example. This is, of course, worst case scenario, but still possible. Just have the gf come to you.
