It's all about managing expectations, doesn't matter what field you're in.

Just remember, success has many fathers, failure is an orphan.

Sometimes difficult unless you are dealing with a fake or purely aspirational deadline.

I find it easier to get mileage out of doing small things that I haven't been asked to do. For example, for a partner who I know tends to fly by the seat of his pants, I make extra efforts to help him come across as well prepared on calls--sometimes by putting together one page summary charts, or by anticipating questions that may be asked and, after giving them some thought myself, discussing them with him in advance. This often has clear benefits, and he is always extremely appreciative. Obviously this is partner/client/matter specific, but with a little bit of thought I can almost always think of something that I can do that won't take me much time but will be noticed by someone who matters.

Exactly this. Also, don't give anyone a heads up you are going those small things until you are done to avoid needlessly raising expectations and committing yourself to extra work.

It's basically code for don't miss deadlines - don't say you'll have it done by a certain time and then turn it in late

Just underpromise and deliver as expected. Don't finish too early - it'll just be expected that you finish early next time.
