Sometimes difficult unless you are dealing with a fake or purely aspirational deadline.
I find it easier to get mileage out of doing small things that I haven't been asked to do. For example, for a partner who I know tends to fly by the seat of his pants, I make extra efforts to help him come across as well prepared on calls--sometimes by putting together one page summary charts, or by anticipating questions that may be asked and, after giving them some thought myself, discussing them with him in advance. This often has clear benefits, and he is always extremely appreciative. Obviously this is partner/client/matter specific, but with a little bit of thought I can almost always think of something that I can do that won't take me much time but will be noticed by someone who matters.
