I've never actually seen someone do it, but as someone who works in-house I get why a driven individual would want to do something else. At least at my company, in-house feels like a mommy track job. No one cares about anything but going home at 5 pm to spend time with families and stuff. There's no ambition or drive left. I imagine middle management bros feel very similar and it's why they are known to get mid life crises and shit.
