I don't know, I assume they aren't paying a fresh out of school lawyer the same as one with 5 yrs of experience.

The firms are typically too small to fuss over years. There are rarely classes of people from each year. But people know who is senior or junior of course.

I love seeing Senior Associate on the profile of some opposing counsel who was admitted in 82.

Shitlaw gets capped salary wise at around 110-130k because at a rate of 150 an hour and partners needing to profit they can't pay you 200k as a business decision.

That may or may not be shitlaw. If you're doing something decent like commercial lit or T&E, that's not bad. If you're doing insurance defense work, then it might be shitty, but some defense work seems to be OK. Depends on the type of work, hour requirements, psycho partners, etc.

no, the work is decidedly unshitlaw. Our opposing counsel in deals and litigation are very often biglaw firms.

OK I've got some friends at firms like that doing everything from T&E, commercial lit, real estate zoning, architectural defense work, tax. Some cool stuff actually. Most really enjoy it, especially as they get a few years out. I think the quality of work and responsibility level is much higher quality than biglaw, so then it becomes a question of hours worked and firm culture.

hours requirements are excellent, like 1700 hours is what is reasonably expected, with almost no weekends.

firm culture is ok....lots of uglies, which kind of stinks.

Oddlaw or flamelaw

Midlaw has very compressed pay scales, and $200k is quite high for any midlaw associate in a secondary/tertiary market

Are you serious? At my firm, the one I describe above, last year the two highest paid partners made $1.6 and $1.0....and then the others made between $400k and $700k. There are a number of firms like mine.

my friend, you know very very little.

for example, my friend's dad owns a 10 person firm, and while i don't know what he makes, his parents house is easily a 1.25-1.5 million house (and this isn't LA/SF/NYC), his folks were able to pay for my friends ivy ugrad, ivy masters with ease, and they constantly have new cars every 2 years (range rover and higher end mercedes). his firm represents many of the area hospitals (in a top 10 largest metro area).

i'm sure his dad isn't the only smalllaw lawyer making serious bank.

any new settlements since the first big one?

Is your life any different other than not having to really work?

Has your wife gone on a spending spree?
