Im a NLJ250 regional "biglaw" M&A/ IP trans atty with a little under 2.5 years of experience. Just got an inhouse job at a midcap company that pays roughly 140-150k including bonus in medium COL city. Is that a good offer? Should I take the job? The position is a mix of everything from contracts work to some regulatory to M&A.

I have roughly 25k in debt left from my "awesome decision" of attending law school.

Is there a danger if I leave this early?

Doesn't seem like there are any red flags, but I'll be interested to hear what others think. If you do leave that early, you'll be on the in-house track for the rest of your life. Would you be OK with that?

I really hate billing. Another option is probably to go to a V100 firm. Recently we have had a couple of associates lateral to V100 firms. The problem is that law firm practice is so much more "prestigious"

I had a close family friend who is a partner tell me that if I leave for inhouse now I could possibly come back to law firm practice if I come back by Year 4. He also told me that if I leave at year 4, it would be much harder to come back to law firm practice.

Yeah you could go back if you don't like inhouse after a year.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

IMO, it depends on what kind of work you'd be doing. Some in house counsel does a wide and interesting range of things. Other in house counsel renegotiates the same contract over and over, which I think would be pretty dull. Either way though, it is a higher quality of life than you get at a law firm.

Judging by what the other attorneys do there, it seems like its not the same contract over and over again. IE not one of those Google or Amazon inhouse jobs, albeit those pay a little more.

Will only having a little under 2.5 years of experience at a regional biglaw shop preclude me from future higher inhouse jobs later on in my career? I could always go to a V100 firm.

Honestly, the magic number of years seems to be about 4. 140K (I am assuming base) is pretty good for someone with 2 years. Wait another 2 years and you will be in the upper end of the 100s IMO.

Sounds legit. Compare it to staying at your firm and making partner.

Do senior associates who leave your firm get better gigs? If not then it doesn't seem like you are giving anything up. You'll definitely be happier once you leave biglaw.

No they don't.

What about the alternate of lateraling to a V100 for another 1-2 years then going inhouse?

I'm not sure what a V100 corporate associate from say Chicago or ATL could get inhouse.
